WIP - Airfix P-51D Mustang

Finally got back to the bench after about a month away. Got three shades of Alclad on the Mustang: airframe aluminum, white aluminum, and dark aluminum. First time using it.

Very happy with the shades. Learned a lot about Alclad and my putty/sanding/surface prep skills though.

Beautiful metal finish, nice and shiney. When I used Alclad on my LARC V it went down very rough, as though it was drying mid air to the surface. Your pony is looking fabulous, yessir I’m jealous over this one, nice.

Thanks. With low pressure and fairly close, it thankfully worked out well. A few mistakes in there for sure.

Continuing to fight my own lack of skills step by step…it gets old after awhile. Didn’t think ahead earlier in the build and had to put the red over black and silver/OD. Went about as well as you’d expect.

Side note: getting really tired of how easy it is to scratch/rub off Vallejo paint. It can’t take anything.

But…learning a lot!

I dont see any lack of skills. On the contrary !

yeah that’s why i don’t use them. maybe for inside fuselage or wheel bays. you need to put a clear coat over them, they never completely harden otherwise

Decals finished. Used a mix of stuff from the sheet, building no particular airplane. It was actually my wife’s idea after another mistake in painting: instead of tossing it, just make something that looks nice. Don’t worry about the history.

She’s smart.

Really liking the way the NMF looks. Almost seems a shame to weather it. Phone camera doesn’t do it justice.

Yer, I’d keep the weathering to a bare minimum

Man-o-man Spit! If I could give your pony 2 hearts and three stars you’d have it! Your little mustang looks fantastic! I wouldn’t weather it one little bit, everything started at an assembly plant somewhere.

Thank you all. Very kind.

At the very least I need to overcoat these decals. Which is a shame because the nice metal sheen will be lost. When I do my F-104, I’ll buy or make masks so I don’t need a clear coat.

Well…this is one of those builds that just petered out instead of ending when I’d planned.

Overcoating the decals would have ruined the metal sheen. And with the problems up to now I wasn’t excited about taking it further. Then life got in the way of bench time for a few months.

I ended up giving it to a coworker headed to a new job in Philadelphia. Here it is all boxed up. He’s happy and I don’t have to look at it anymore. :slightly_smiling_face:
