In addition to fifty Tacomas, SOCOM purchased fifty UAZ 469’s for use in Afghanistan. The story goes that they came from India where the final assembly took place. By the time they were delivered to us parts were falling off of them.
Two of my team members and I took an unauthorized drive toward Jalalabad one day out of boredom. We blew through several checkpoints, not really knowing who in the hell was manning them. When we returned, instead of going to KMTC we went to Camp Warehouse where most of ISAF was. (probably a beer run) After all the driving we had done that day in Indian Country, the UAZ sputtered out at Camp Warehouse. Some Germans were walking by (obviously former NVA) and laughed at us. They said, “When Germany reunited those are the first pieces of sh!t we got rid of!”
