Hi, this is my first post here after scouring the forums for a couple of years; I recently acquired a Dragon UH-1D kit for a somewhat reasonable price but would like to turn it into a late-war ~1973-75 ARVN UH-1H that has the Anti-Strella exhaust and covers but can’t seem to find any options for such add ons.
Here’s a picture of the Anti-Strella field modifications:
Oh that’s perfect! I’ve heard that Lone Star Models went out of business several years back or no longer produces helicopter resin sets. Do you happen to know anyone that sells these on the aftermarket?
I don’t think he is technically out of business just his availability is always changing. Both him and Chris from Cobra Company were direct sales. So eBay might be your best option or search for a 3D option.
Oh okay, I’ll look out for those options! Do you think it’s possible to upscale a Werner’s Wings Anti-Strella 1/48 resin kit or is it more trouble than it is worth?
I think the engine and probably the oil heat shields are not too hard to scratch build but I don’t know how I would attempt to scratch build the bowl exhaust cover itself.
I would start with rolled construction paper the diameter of the exhaust to work out the cut angles. Then find some plastic tubing and make the same cuts.
I’ve been looking for that as well, but for a Rhodesian UH-1D. So far, no luck. I’m thinking it’ll take someone who knows how to use a 3D printer and that’s definitely not me. If I do find a source I’ll let you know.
I have discovered that there does exist an Anti-Strella bowl exhaust in polystyrene form! The ICM AH-1G Cobra 1/35 does include this option in both their “late-war” and “early-war” offerings as seen in the bottom left of the sprue. There’s probably some fit issues but super negligible to custom fit it to the Dragon kit. Guess the only thing left would be to scratch build the rest of Anti-Strella kit, such as the engine and oil heat shield; probably using the WW resin set as a guide.
