Hi Piet,

The tower looks great, test or otherwise, I enjoy following your bunker-work, whatever the era/conflict.

Such structures hold a fascination for me, and I am really tempted to have a go, but unfortunately I lack your talent, so will have to make do with admiring your builds, :slightly_smiling_face:.

Cheers,,

gonna be truthful, the most realistic concrete emplacement I’ve ever seen was created by Pawl Vodnik. It even had the black mold growing on it! If memory is right, he placed a quad fifty ontop of it. Made me feel wet and cold looking at it.

The Sea Bees (in this case) were very good at pouring concrete. You’ll see lines from the concrete forms (usually plywood), but otherwise pretty smooth. Yet not slick. Taking the fact that your doing a December thru January time frame keep the above in mind about the green and black mold growing in the sides. The monsoon season doesn’t end up there till about the end of March, and it gets a little chilly at night as well. Down my way, we were done with the monsoon around the end of Feb. Always wondered how they did the roof on those towers. Remember in that time frame virtually all sand bags were a grey to a light grey color. The green ones were almost six months away up north. Also feel free to use the good old Browning 30 caliber machine gun, as they were quite popular with SF in I-Corp. Not uncommon to see one with an M60 right beside it. It had it’s advantages. Perhaps a Starlight scope in the towers as well.

I’ve seen the photo before. Down south i believe. A glorious waste of shaving cream.

It rained most of the day on the 24th, and kept raining on Christmas Day (although a light rain). Quit about eight in the evening, and we got ready for fun and games starting at midnight. A Vietnamese Ranger platoon found a huge ammo dump on the back side of the Hiep Duc Ridge line. Talk about fire works!

About noon the Colonel and Sargent Major flew out to eat with us. The XO flew into Hawk Hill (he was a wimp), while the Colonel and SM flew up to Ryder to visit with Charley Battery (though place). They came back about three or four and we all ate together. Came around and shook everybody’s hand, and wished all a holiday greeting. Then asked us how we were doing our Christmas Cease Fire? We said we had plans for early in the morning, and he asked what. The SF guys had photos to show and we said we were going to shoot up the backside of the ridge right after midnight. He said he was spending the night just to see this. Sent his chopper back home and just waited for time to pass. At twelve minutes exactly after midnight (by Top’s watch as he was the law west of Thien Phouc) we had three guns fire up the place. Explosions lasted four to five minutes and we could see them from the blind side of the ridge. That morning (about two AM) they over ran OP88 right out in front of us, and at about nine in the morning we completely destroyed what was left of OP88. Just about time they raised the VC flag maybe 1500 yards out. Back to business as usual out west. The next morning (27th) half of us went on an OP with the 101st to the most rat infested place on the planet. If you didn’t get pneumonia, you got rat bit. Least it was above the rain clouds.

The new tower looks great … then again, the first one was pretty damn good as well lol … nice techniques on how you get them to look that way. :+1:

been awhile since I saw the two wrecks, but knowing the guys had to drive them all the way down there from NVN, I would think they’d show a lot of wear. Not quite like breaking jungle, but a hundred miles of real bad road for sure.

I remember reading about the MACV-SOG guys operating in Laos saying they heard tank engines starting up and moving around so the NVA had some sort of maintenance facilities and judging by the way they operated, it my have been primitive but I bet it was well organised and very efficient.

Hi Piet,

Nice animation of the layout, really gives us an idea of the dynamics of the finished work, :slightly_smiling_face:.
