1/35 Fallout Enclave Dragon MBT-70

Hi everyone!

I know I’ve got a ton of projects in “progress” right now but I honestly think I’ll shelve all of them for a bit for this one.

I’ve loved the Fallout series of video games for majority of my life, and ever since I’ve seriously gotten into AFVs and AFV modelling I’ve been really dissatisfied with the AFVs in the Fallout series. Fallout is based in an extremely retro-futuristic post apocalyptic world which had 40s-50s culture, music, firearms, fashion, alongside heavily armored suits, abundant use of nuclear energy and robots, along with plasma, laser, modern day weapons, and etc. It’s honestly got a lot of clashing aesthetics, with the most notable ones which relate to their AFVs being the pre apocalypse 50s culture and sci fi elements. But I just feel like the MBT in Fallout (pictured below) is so lackluster to me.

there’s a good video which breaks down it’s and other Fallout AFV’s flaws, which includes the fact that the Fallout MBT doesn’t even have sprockets (so it’s unable to even move). But my real issue is in it’s appearance and unrealistic features. I’d really prefer something like an M48 style tank, or even an MBT-70 with modifications to fit the more retro futuristic style of fallout, which is what I’ll be doing with this project. I thought that an MBT-70 with a cast turret with the 20mm autocannon, along with it’s mounting area removed would be a much more compelling and more grounded in reality MBT for the US army in Fallout; but for now I’ll be making an MBT-70 from the Enclave faction, which are the post apocalyptic remnants of the US Government. they frequently use power armor and plasma and gauss weaponry, along with helicopters such as the Vertibird, they’re extremely high tech and have a ton of experimental weaponry.

(Example of Enclave power armor)

(Example of Vertibird)

But moving onto the kit itself, I just received it in the mail with some goodies alongside it, I’m planning to use the m1919 barrels as a coax machine gun, the Trex abrams tracks as replacements for the kit tracks (I’m pretty sure that leopard tracks would also work for this, I might be wrong though), Aber metal barrels to replace the kit barrels, and an ETmodels IDF Droid APS…as an APS (since I accidentally bought the wrong type so it was just sitting there and I thought it’d look cool on this)

I’m aiming to make my MBT-70 as an experimental upgraded version (I’ll call it MBT-70E5), which has been pushed into service under the Enclave in northern California. I originally planned for it to have these “tesla” glowing things on it like the Enclave have on some of their power armor (pictured below).

I thought that those “tesla” glowing things could act as an APS against energy weapons for the MBT-70 but I dont have a 3D printer or any way to make those so I’ll put those on another Enclave MBT-70 I’ll make (maybe when Takom finally makes one, their VT1-2 kit has the roadwheels for it!!) But for this build I think I’ll slap on ERA from the Tamiya M60A1 w ERA, along with spares from Academy m113 sprues, and parts from some dollar tree toys I honestly got to just mess around with on this kit. (I’ll be sure to call out the sources for my other modifications though) Also one last thing before I finally show the parts of the kit and some photos of it; I’ve been thinking about how to paint the MBT-70E5, and I’ve settled the options being either light grey (similar to the photo of that tesla power armor), a dark black/OD, (probably something like those US mbts in Europe during the cold war or something similar to the first power armor photo), and a red desert/desert MERDC camo, or any other unique American AFV camos that could fit in.

(but now that I think more about it, the experimental Ferris USAF camo could be kind of cool for the MBT-70E5 if I desertize the colors and change it up a bit)

Okay, okay so now onto the actual kit itself, I’ve taken some photos of rough drafts of modifications I’ve already thought out some more, such as the ERA and cast turret.

Here’s a photo of the upper turret half, note all of the ridges and hard corners it has, I’m planning to sand them smooth and make the turret curved and then apply a cast texture all around it.

I’ve blu tacked on the ERA panels and the smoke launchers from the Tamiya M60A1 kit, I’ll show photos and explain my plans for it but if anybody has any tips or comments for any part of this build feel free to let me know!

(Bad photo but you get the idea:)

I’m also planning to cut off some of the ERA blocks from these panels to fill in these gaps here:

I’m so far planning to cut off the era blocks which are pointed out here to allow better fit and coverage:

This area is entirely naked (pictured below), but I’ll cut up this era panel to make it cover that area up (pictured below the naked area)

(I’ll cut off the left section and separate the red circled area)

(Then I’ll reattach it onto the top of the panel in the area circled in red below)

But that’s all for this post, thank you so much for taking your time to read all of this! I hope you enjoyed it and I hope you’ve all been doing good. :+1:

What a cool project to see! I love ideas like this that come out of video games, sci fi and subjects like that. You’ve certainly got some interesting goodies to add to the base MBT-70. I like your ideas for the camo too- that experimental USAF scheme is pretty badass looking!

Hi everyone!

It’s been a bit and I’ve made some progress on my MBT-70 but I’ve been pretty absent from the workbench. I’ve still been idly thinking about ideas for the MBT-70 and the other variants of this tank I’ll make in an Enclave scheme; and I remembered that I have an Academy Merkava Mk 4B just sitting in my stash, and I thought it’d be perfect for the Enclave as an even more advanced early prototype that’s pushed into service.

I think that the Merkava Mk4 will be an easier build in terms of simplicity and fit, but I have to wait a bit/while to get the aftermarket I want for it. I’m thinking about getting a 140mm metal barrel from Chuanyu Model Ship that was originally made for the leopard 2 revolution II, Shanma model’s new TWMP mine plow, possibly different machine guns (Such as M240s or maybe M134s, or maybe a Fallout energy weapon) to replace the coax 50 cal and commander’s FN MAG.

Leopard 2 Revolution (I think the long 140mm would look nice)

Shanma model TWMP (It’s made for the Abrams but I’ll see what I can do to fit it onto the Merkava)

Or maybe Shanma’s LVT-E mine plow, I just saw it on Scalemates right now and I think it looks sick too!

Also I’ve been worried about how this will come to fruition since I don’t have a 3D printer myself, but I think adding “tesla coils” from the Enclave tesla power armor onto the turret of the Merkava could be really cool.

(The glowing things are the “tesla coils”)

I technically could scratch build these but I’d rather build an AEF designs kit then make all of those little tesla thingies a million times :face_with_bags_under_eyes: (I’d genuinely go crazy I don’t think I’d want to do that, or honestly either one I’m scared of both AEF and the tesla thingies)

Also completely off topic but I remember the first time I even knew of AEF was when I saw an AEF designs resin set in the first IPMS show I went to last year, and I thought that their logo (which is a Merkava Mk 1) was cool; the resin set might’ve been for some German ww2 tank or something I just wasn’t interested in (or something I didn’t even have the kit for), and I remember thinking about how if it was just a set for an IDF subject I’d get it. (Which is kind of cynically funny to be because I’d hate to deal with an AEF product)

Okay but back to the point I wanted to make, I’d honestly REALLY appreciate it if someone out there who has a 3d printer is willing to design and print out those tesla coils for me, I’d 100% pay you to design them and buy them from you!

But that’s about all it for the completely separate and new modifications I’ll add to the Merkava for now, I’ve already been modifying the side skirts and making sub assembles though.

Here’s how they are OOTB, the curved bottom sections are made from rubber/flexible black material are all molded together but on the real thing they’re separate pieces which seem to have different angles.

(I sent this post too early so I’ll just create a whole new one to continue this)

Hi! here’s part 2:

So I first was scribing out the molded on indentations to separate each of these pieces, until I just used my razor saw which worked wonders, I then bent these parts and here’s the finished result:

Along with this I’ve glued the main turret parts together, here’s the main bulk of the kit:

Also I’ve made the main gunner sight!

But finally here’s some things I forgot to mention: I’m planning to add the IDF droid APS to this Merkava from ET Models and anti slip (I think I’ll add it by using Mr Surfacer mixed with retarder with fine aquarium sand or chinchilla sand sprinkled on).

By the way, thanks for reading all of this! I hope you’ve enjoyed it and I hope you all are doing well.

Thank you a bunch! I’ll honestly consider the experimental USAF scheme for the Merkava, thanks so much for following along!

Those are some cool modifications you are planning for the Merkava- I think the angular shape of the 4M should suit your Fallout setting quite well.

Will this tank be stationed at Adams Air Force Base?

The Merkava will be stationed at Navarro from Fallout 2, the MBT-70 will be stationed at the Mariposa Military Base (during the Enclave’s occupation), but a Fallout 3 Enclave tank is a really damn good idea!

I’m honestly thinking of an uparmored and 105mm/120mm armed M551 Sheridan, or maybe a modified flamethrower Bradley? I’ll mention my ideas on that more later though :+1:

(You really make me want to do something stupid and make a small scale model of the mobile base crawler in AAFB though :smiling_face_with_horns:)

Forgive me chipping in as I know nothing about the genre, specifically the scenario you’re describing, but if you’re looking for the distinctive, you could probably do worse than select a model of the Chrysler TV-8, which I tackled some time ago; now, I set it firmly in the 50s, but with such a shape you do almost anything with it, I would have thought:

Wrong. We want you to build a Freakin’ HUGE model of a mobile base crawler…

Hi Boots! Thanks for the suggestion with the TV-8, I thought you did a great job on it! I’d really consider getting that kit and making a diorama of it wading through water but the price tag for that kit is a bit too steep for me :crying_cat:

Also by the way, I loved the Dutch Kpz-70 you made, I’ve never been too interested in the Kpz/Mbt-70 and your work on it made me really fascinated in it and the what-if possibilities it has!

You’re a psychic, how could you tell I was thinking about that ??? :frowning_with_open_mouth:

Buy me a 3D printer though and I’ll come back to you in two years… :smiling_face_with_horns: :smiling_face_with_horns: :smiling_face_with_horns:

Oh, well, thanks for that.

The TV-8 is just such a strange beast I couldn’t resist it, but it does come with a fairly hefty price; that said, we’ll not see one otherwise I reckon; OKB Grigorov did us all a service I feel.

Thanks for the observations re the MBT-70/Kpz-70; my Dutch one has stalled a bit as I have to build a secondary vehicle, as I call them (ie something smaller that will support the larger), and also devise/convert some figures, which always slows me down a bit. That said, I’ve (foolishly) initiated a couple of other projects, which naturally enough, distract. I am clearly my own worst enemy!

Thanks again for the comments.

Not the first time thats been said to me.

The tesla tank from Border might be a good start point for a Enclave tesla tank.
Dont worry my vault dweller is busy haggling with the blue ridge caravan.

If I could handle a 3D printer my first effort would be a Traction City in the style of “Mortal Engines” in about 1:720 scale… As it is, I have a Japanese castle in 1:700th which I was going to use as background for displaying some IJN/JMSDF stuff, but it might just end up chugging around on tracks in some Hayao Miyazaki-inspired Oriental steampunk setting.
