About 5 to 10 years ago a model company issued a new tool 1/35 Saladin. It was not Dragons black label. Was it AFV Club? Anyway, it had a full interior. I’d like to find one. Anybody remember what company it is? All my internet searches just bring up Dragon/DML.
Greg, thank you for that. I was still under the impression that all the Black Labels are not well thought of. I like what Cookie said about the only two kits were the tamiya and the Roco. I probably have a dozen little Rocos LOL.
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
An empty wallet and lack of outrageous fortune.
Or to take strength against a sea of wants
And by opposing end them. To stash—to pass,
No more; and by pass to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand Xacto nicks
That model building is heir to: 'tis a conundrum
Devoutly to be coddled. To build, to sleep;
To sleep, perchance to dream—ay, there’s the rub:
For in that sleep of cyano fumes what dreams may come?
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
The legacy of the unbuilt left must give us pause
That makes calamity of so short life.
The Dragon kit is much maligned; sure, it falls short a bit but with some basic modelling skills it can still turn out as a decent model. I followed my modelling mate’s progress with it all a decade ago. No need for new wheels or specific update sets at all - assuming you’ve a fairly well provided spares box admittedly.
Pete Smith - aforementioned friend, runs a blog and his progress can be charted here, starting off with a review:
Fred, I have the Dragon Black Plague Saladin. It is without doubt the best of the series, and is fairly fault-free. It will build decently OOB, but I have the DEF wheels and SMM update set, which will produce an exceptional model. Consider this combination instead of chasing an AA version.
Tom, Robin, et. al, thank you. You have convinced me that a Black Label with upgrades is the way to go. I was seduced by the interior of the Accurate Armor model, but I’d probably just screw all that up and end up throwing it out.
And forget the model! I’m glad I asked the question simply for Pete’s post. Pete, was that from Socrates, Aristotle, Shakespeare, Tennyson, or the Panzer of the Lake?
MR Modellbau also makes a couple of Saladin upgrade sets as well. These are not as extensive as the Hong Kong Creation Workshop update set (the SMM set everyone mentions above, but it is sold under the HKCW banner) but provide the most important parts like new turret hatches.
