What kind of flatcar would be the base for this panzerjagerwagen? I was looking at building two for a diorama with the panzertriebwagen No. 16. My initial thought is it’s a type me flat car but i also think it could be something lighter. I have two iron side light flat cars that i was hoping to use. My thought was i could get two T-34/76 upper hulls and modify them to fit. Just need to know what would be the best base kit to start with.
Thank in advance.
Below is a link for 1/72 reference
I am no expert but, lacking a real photo, that kit looks like an Ommr with some added armour to protect the bogies. You could use Sabre model:
https://www.sabremodel.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=57&product_id=57
The turret is clearly from factory 112 circa late 42 to mid 43 and the lower hull upper half is from an 1941 production vehicle based on the drivers hatch. You can find both vehicles from dragon bot you need to hack on plastic.
Then there is
which can be solved with https://www.scalemates.com/kits/dragon-6448-t-34-76-model-1941-2-in-1--1442478
Or the original resin set with https://www.scalemates.com/kits/dragon-6757-t-34-76-mod1943-w-commander-cupola--1379737
@ignoramusRex i was on eBay looking for spare hulls so that shouldn’t be too much of an issue. My major question is the base railcar then Going from there. Thank you for the better photos
The german flatcar in this case is a wrong choice. I’m also building pzjgwagons for Panzertriebwagen No.16, and made this same mistake at start, even bought this Sabre set… (which is great anyway and will use for other projects).
Photos i’ve found, shows that PT 16 had 2 T-34 wagons, one with older turret, possibly welded ‘42 or cast ‘43 (more likely), and a second with model ‘43 hexagonal turret. I have photos of both types coupled with PT 16:
The one below is just a reference, probably not from PT 16 team:
After researching scarce photos, it appears, that this cars were made by modifying and armoring russian 2 axle 20t, “11”? meters long flatcars, also mentioned in model kit UM MT 674 Armored Platform “Tank Destroyer” and this one www.mojehobby.pl/products/Armored-Train-Platform.html , tho this kit has it own flaws, it can be used as general reference on construction and dimensions. On this site, almost at end of article, is a drawing with dimensions of the real thing: Грузовые вагоны постройки 1918—1928 г
UM kit is a bad reference in regard of Pztw 16, coz the kit is basically modified short 16,5 - 18t wagon, which in turn is portrayed well by MiniArt in 1/35, and can be used as some ref. Also MiniArt has nice set of russian rail wheels, that will be handy in this project.
Those armored cars differ so much from original platforms, that its better to scratch build it, than changing some kit.
This article may be of some help too: 1/35 detailed plastic and resin model kits and accessories | 1/35 Russian 20t low sided wagon
I’ll add more info soon.
@Zeiram these are some great pics thank you for the information. Luckily I’m in the planning stage for this. What kit do you think you’ll go with for the railcar then?
edit: i wonder if the miniart Russian railcars wouldn’t be a good base kit?
So, yes, MiniArt 35303 Flatbed 16,5 - 18t can be used, BUT aside from railroad tracks, it will mostly provide suspension and coupling hooks, maybe decking if u want it wooden, and some frame parts can be used. Personally i bought a russian rail wheel set, MiniArt 35607, 12pcs of axles, 24 wheels early/late with appropiate leaf springs there.
Suspension, coupling hooks and buffers, i make it myself.
At the beginning I came across a cheap set of 2 platforms from Saber, but after starting construction, it turned out that German parts are different than in photographs, Ergo wagons are based on Russian. As I am not rich, I decided on a scratch build wagon, using photographs and inboxes of models of similar wagons, e.g. the mentioned Minates and UM. When I came across a dimensioned pattern, my mistakes came out and I had to correct the length and width of the platform. In the end I got cheaper Minart 35303 Flatbed 18T, so I could compare parts and have patterns for smaller elements.
There is also a cardboard model PT16 GPM No. 362, but it is such a mess of all dimensional and substantive errors that it is more like a parody, I do not recommend using.
As for the tank hull, i recommend using something cheaper than Dragon; old Tamiya and zvezda are enough well detailed, tho Tamiya has known some dimensional issues, but its easiest to get nowadays, and when it comes modify it for the train, oldies need less cutting and covering. Actually i recommend using only upper half of hull, if not making it from scratch too, since the tub is better to make from scratch thus avoid cutting and (in case of i.e. Dragon or similarly detailed) masking all those suspension holes. The main choice is which turret u want to use… ![]()
I’m out of time atm, ill write more details later. Cheers.
That photo is great! TYVM for it, it gives me much information.
@Zeiram honestly I’m considering getting the 18T railcar and trying that as my base kit. I feel like I’d have to re build part of the flatbed. The pictures seem to show a solid piece ontop of the railcar rather than individual beams of wood. Maybe I’m wrong in this thought process but i feel like this would be the most feasible way to do it.
As for the actual T-34 there is a mundane of parts on eBay to where i can build one without breaking the bank.
That’s true, deck looks like quite smooth and in camo colour, also the height is kinda too low for thick planking. If we consider later Panzerjagerwagens built in german factory, metal plate deck, maybe with antislip pattern, is a likely solution.
@Zeiram i think my solution would be styrene on top of the wood deck to give it a smooth look. That may be an over simplified lazy approach but it may just work.
That’s not lazy if it is true to original.
If U hold on few days with cutting, ill try to draw some schematic with numbers i came to. Prototype drawing become messy n doodley…
@Zeiram im no where near ready to start this project. Would love a drawing to go off of if you have time to make one.
I have just found this one on pinterest. Bad quality, but dunno if i would get better with account.
This one gives some hint on the camouflage of the PT16, and surprisingly, they attached some point the armour skirts to T-34 carts.
@Zeiram the side skirt would be easier to do with any railcar. Especially if i can’t narrow down the right one
