Yes, I think adding the tiles is crazy but also that detail will stand out when done. No one will have a sub that matches. ![]()
Wow…just wow!
This will look amazing.
Well, after a few more sessions and after a third round of cutting and measuring, it’s nearly done. All that’s left now is to do the rudder.
I can’t wait to have this painted. Hopefully it doesn’t obscure the pattern too too much, but some pre and post shading should take care of that. I don’t want it to stand out too much, but I don’t want the paint hiding it so we’ll see how it turns out.
Cheers!
Looks great. Almost a shame to paint over it.
Astonishing- such an interesting thing to do with a sub-kit!
Primer is on and I’ve got a dilemma.
I was originally going to paint this by doing some mottling and then work pretty heavily with sponged on oils for post-shading but now I’m not sure that would be the best route.
Looking at reference photos, it looks like the pattern acts as one, within reason, and each little rectangle doesn’t really stand out all that much from the last, so highlighting each one wouldn’t result in the right look.
What do y’all think would be a good approach for painting this? The goal for me is to keep the pattern subtle, but noticeable enough that you stare, wondering what it is before you finally realize, as I don’t want the pattern to overshadow the scene as a whole.
Cheers and thanks in advance!
What about painting black with some purple mixed in and a black wash.
Got the idea from this.
It’s a nice problem to have – according to my eyes (always open to doubt) the channels between each tile are very shallow on your ref pics…
…so I’d try as many coats as necessary to make yours similarly shallow – by slapping it on and wiping off the tile surfaces. Might only need 2 coats of that.
The colour variation between tiles appears to be zero, alas, the last thing any modelmaker wants to see. I think the only relevant variation might be horizontal i.e. at-surface waterline mark, but I don’t really know what that would look like, apart from like a scum-mark round a bath?!
