I was impressed the way the 1/72 Hobbyboss F9F-2P turned out that I decided to do another but this time a 1/48th scale F9F-2 by Trumpeter. I ordered the kit today and it should be in this weekend, I hope. I want to do it as one of the first jet vs jet kills in Korea, Lt Cmdr. William Amen shot down a Mig-15 while escorting F4U Corsairs on a bombing mission, November 9, 1950. The kit has the decals for that jet he was flying at the time of the kill.
Excellent project and subject choice! The beginnings of jet vs. jet air combat!
Here is my subject, Lt Cmdr Amen. Kit shipped today.
I started with the boo boo on the nose gear leg. I cut off the coil spring from the right and made one to put on the left side, Trumpeter molded it on the wrong side. I made one from an unused speed brake cylinder from a 1/72 F-15C kit.
I am moving on to the cockpit, the seat is built and now I need to buy seat belts or make them then paint the seat. Eduards had some nice PE colored ones.
Some work done on the cockpit. The tub is painted and instrument panel built and installed. I placed the seat in, it needs to be removed as I have more painting on it and it needs seat belts.
The cockpit is all assembled. I added Eduard seat belts and harnesses, then the rudder pedals and stick.
The nose gear bay is attached to the cockpit. I assembled the nose cone and did a test fit to the taped up fuselage halves. Fit looks pretty good so far.
I added some weight to the nose then glued the nose to the fuselage. I need a small amount of putty to fill some thin gaps in the nose.
The nose is puttied and sanded, the gun sight is installed and the canopy and wind screen glued in place closed.
