Another Korean War aircraft. It’s a decent kit that’s fairly detailed for it’s scale. I am building the photo version as I built the fighter version by Hobbyboss 2 years ago, I have an addiction to dark blue planes.
Thanks for building this as I find that blue jet era to be fascinating. Definitely watching.
Some work to get started. I did some painting and detailing of the cockpit, no decals as I paint the dials and switches. I also cut the coil spring off the nose gear as HobbyBoss-Trumpeter have it molded on the wrong side, replaced it with a piece of sprue. The spring should be on the left side of the nose gear when viewed from the front, it was molded on the right side. See the picture of the F9F-2P in the carrier hanger I posted.
I have weight in the nose and the fuselage closed up. I puttied up 2 small triangular vents near the base of the tail, these are on the -5 Panther not the -2, also if you look behind the canopy deck area and above the wing root you will see a large rectangular door with a corner cut off at an angle. This was the shape of the door on the -5 Panther and NOT the -2. Below the model picture is a picture of a -2 photo Panther with a square door, these are blow in doors to take in air, the -5 had a bigger engine so it needed a bigger door with the corner cut off to clear the -5s larger engine. I fixed it on my -2 fighter but am not going to on this one, too dam lazy!
While the HobbyBoss-Trumpeter is a nice kit it has quite a few boo boos. It also has the wrong shape of the canopy to wind screen join BUT I am leaving the canopy open so it will be less noticeable. Monogram got it right on their old 90s 1/48 Panther, FWIW!
Here is my fix for my -2 fighter I did in 2021. I puttied the angled corner and scribed a line at a right angle, makeing a rectangle, better but still not right as the -2s door looks more square than rectangle. Also behind that is the triangular vent I puttied and sanded down near the base of the tail, just baerly visible near the edge of the picture.
Wings. The intakes have no “backing plate” making them see through. I cut a paper template and now I see it works I can cut 2 out of plastic card stock and paint them black. They will prevent see through. Not sure if the wings will make it on this year! LOL
Wings on, need to sand a few puttied spots, build and add wing tip tanks and stabs. Then I can mask and paint.
Main landing gear, gear doors on, leading edges of wings, stabs and tail painted silver. I need to add the nose gear doors and pitot tube then I can gloss coat, add decals and add rear canopy.
