This Firefly tank was built primarily using the Dragon kit, combined with a Black Dog resin turret, with some turret parts and the tracks being 3D-printed. Additionally, I used toothpaste putty to handcraft the gun mantlet and transmission cover armor to replicate the cast texture. I also added hull weight and a magnetic turret attachment.
What is toothpaste putty? Just plan tooth paste? Nice work.
Something probably went wrong in translation there
Toothpaste = 牙膏 (says Google Translate, I’m afraid I can’t read hànzì myself
) and I’m not sure that would work well on a model except for things like polishing clear parts.
This likely stems from a small cultural difference. We usually refer to this type of Tamiya putty as ‘toothpaste putty’ because its squeeze tube packaging and paste-like consistency closely resemble actual toothpaste.
I was thinking you had a new way to add texture to a model! ![]()
Aha — that makes sense once you know the background
For comparison: Dutch modellers sometimes refer to “liquorice laces” (American English: “licorice”), which would likely also cause confusion until you know what those are and what they sort of resemble.
Mmmmm Licqorice laces yum yum love them
Fantastic work Jim.Really nice Sherman

Oh man, beautiful work and I cannot believe it’s 1/72. I only only imagine what you can do in 1/35 or 1/16 ![]()
Hi Jim, very nice tanks: what else should I expect? “Hull weight “ and “magnetic turret attachment” means some nuts or something like it glued inside the hull to increase weight of the model and some magnets, to keep turret on the hull, please?
And what about miniatures, from where they came from, please :D? Thank you very much!
Thanks, Miloss. Yes, I added 10g of self-adhesive metal weights inside the model’s hull—they’re very convenient to use. The resin turret from Black Dog didn’t fit well with the Dragon hull, so I built a connection mechanism myself using plastic plates and magnetic pieces. I also incorporated some 3D-printed parts, including the gun mantlet, muzzle brake, turret hatches, radio antenna mounts, and more. These were sourced from a local 3D printing shop called “Wakusei Turbo.”
wow i must say that sherman tank looks fantastic the color matching perfect
Nice, Jim99, very nice, thank you. And what about miniatures? ![]()
They’re by 3D Printing too.
Jing, all your work is excellent. From the building, to painting and weathering, really excellent work. Especially the camouflage jobs!
I thought these were 1/35 scale models at first! Wow
Thank u ![]()
