2001 Astronaut, 3D Printed

I stumbled across this free file on Cults 3D early last week and just could not resist. So this will be a side project for me over the next who knows how long, an astronaut from 2001, A Space Odyssey…. I printed him up overnight, starting at about 6:30 pm yesterday and he finished printing at around 11:15 am today, nearly 17 hours of print time. The figure stands at approximately 165-170mm tall.

This project will be mostly paint work, although I do plan to make a base for him as well.

What color astronaut are you thinking about doing?

Note that this is the suit design for the Discovery crew. The suits worn by the Clavius team on the Moon had a different design for the chest and backpack modules:

Thank you sir. I’m actually thinking about a combination of the two. I saw that the Discovery crew had the outside gear worn on this figure, but I like the silver suits worn by the moon personnel. In theory, combination likely happened. I just might print up more to do the different color suits just for fun

Thanks, I ended up downloading the same one, but I will be reducing to 1/12th to go with the rest of my figures. I couldn’t muster up the courage to download the Frank Poole one though.

Nicely rendered figure Carlos, look forward to seeing him painted up,:+1::slightly_smiling_face:.

Thanks guys!

@Dixon66, I printed him at 75%, and that came out just a tad bit taller than my Bandai Imperial Stormtrooper. They will look fine displayed together.

When I was looking for good shots of the Clavius suit gear, I saw that there was at least one set of 3D models for printing – an Instructables page for making the suit for cosplay, with Badjermaker putting all of the STL models up on his Etsy page (albeit for $50, which I think is excessive for something you’d have to do the work of modding together in the slicer or a 3D modeling program to scale down to put on the chest and back of a miniature figure)

Today I finally started painting my figure. First it was primers… gray on most of the figure and white on the helmet area

Then a few hours later I painted the space suit using Vallejo silver…

Looks like I’ll need to do some touch up work in it, although to the Mk.1 eyeball, those strokes and thin areas are not visible. Funny how merciless that digital photography can be… I had to think back a bit, but I haven’t painted a figure larger than 1/32 scale since I was a kid painting Aurora movie monster figures with Testors square bottles about 50 some odd years ago…

I’ve done a bit more work on painting him up…

Not too happy with how the look of some of the colors are turning out at this point…

“Just what do you think you’re doing Dave? sorry, Carlos?” :upside_down_face:

Presumably it’s the intensity of the orange/tan you’re not happy with? I dunno you seem to have nailed it - hard to get an accurate read on the variety of colour-balanced images I just looked at, and difficult to gauge from this image too because there’s orange/red surrounding it…

The orange looks good to me- what is it you are not happy with?

It’s more of the textures of some of the paints. Not smooth on close examination.

What brand is it that you are using?

I’m using all sorts of acrylics… Vallejo, AK, Humbrol, Revell, and Testors. It’s the glossy ones that are not playing well.

I don’t use many glossy paints myself so I can’t comment on how they work. But if you find matt colors behave better in terms of finish then you could always use them and then apply a coat of satin or gloss varnish.
