2nd Escuadrilla Azul, 15./JG 51 colors

Spanish volunteers were designated as 15/JG-51(in 1942). Reference is their aircraft numbers were black or red. Specs indicate 15 Staffel (IV Gruppe) should have yellow as the Staffel color. Que?/ Was ist los?

The “1” doesn’t look yellow to me…

Same here for the “11” in the background

I guess using period pics as reference rather than specs is the way to go here…

Si, Senior. Now, red or black? Asisbiz site captions refer to “Red 1”, “Red7”. (though one color plate they use shows “Red 1” with a black “1”). Decal sets seem to have settled on black. Red does end to look black(ish) in B&W photos. Asisbiz Messerschmitt Bf 109F4 15.JG51(Spain) Red 7 Robles Russia 1942 01

Tim, I would go for Black …

This is my Bf 109 F-2 of the 2. Esquadrilla Azul (15./JG 51) from Hasegawa in 1/48.
I would recommend a book that I have, though it’s all in german. It’s called “Die fliegenden Verbände der Blauen Division” (The flying units of the Blue Division), ISBN 3-925 480-38-2. Probably hard to get on the other side of the pond. The book has 2 photos of this aircraft.

Nice work. Asisbiz has a half dozen photos of 15/JG51 109Fs.(probably the same one.) Still question the color of the numbers. As Frenchy said, not reg. yellow. (Staffeln 2,6,10,14 were either black or red, according to reg.) Decals point at black but couple ref. say red. Asisbiz Messerschmitt Bf 109F4 15.JG51(Spain) Red 7 Robles Russia 1942 01

Just came across another related thread on a Spanish forum :

They seem as confused as me. Maybe more so if they think IJN had 109Es at the Battle of Coral Sea.
