"A Pair of Aces"

What do you do when you have a Tiger and Kubelwagen, a diorama of course. The title refers to the two figures atop the tank. They represent Otto Carius and Albert Kerscher, a pair of Tiger ‘aces’. In just one tenty minute engagement at Malinava, Latvia, using two Tigers, they destroyed 22 Russian tanks between them. The house, fence & gate are from Dio Dump, a company from the Netherlands. Because of the size of the base, I did have to extend the fence to the right.

The two panzer ‘aces’ were an Alpine set. I switched their arms to get the poses I wanted.

The Tiger is a Tamiya kit with Atak zimmerit. I replaced the kit tracks with a set fro T Rex. I also added a few small details.

The infantrymen are from a Tamiya set. I added some ‘battle damage’ to the exhaust covers.

In order to extend the Dio Dump supplied fence to the edge of the base, I scratchbuilt the wooden section behind the machine gunner.

The Kubelwagen is the Tamiya kit, built OOB with just some stowage added.

The old man is a Stalingrad item, the others are from Masterbox.

The woman in the window was from Miniart.

The farm cart and a lot of the items used were also from various Miniart sets.

Thanks for looking, any comments or quesions are welcome.

Fantastic diorama Al! The Tiger looks menacing. The figures are outstanding. The whole thing comes together as an excellent scene. The civilians are a nice touch, they bring a bit of humanity to the scene.

Thanks for such high praise, Matt. I like adding civilians for the human touch and a bit of color.

Everything’s to like about this & a helluva lot of hours were involved to pull it off - apart from the obvious bullseyes no shiny clothes/uniforms either, so bravo and by all means ignore the following because we need more diorama-makers like you.

You may have seen another current thread where I suggested three of us form a sub-group called The Over-Weathermen…we like mud/dust because we think it looks more like period photos. All your elements, to a dirty old man like myself, look way too clean including the house. I won’t labour the point, it’s always personal preference so as I said ignore me & I won’t be offended :+1:

Thanks for the compliments, Tim. As to the weathering, I agree that it is a matter of taste. I also think that the degree of weathering on a vehicle or building can vary quite a bit and still be ‘realistic’. One other point, photos can be deceiving, the models may be ‘dirtier’ than they appear. As to offense, none taken. I realize that your comments were meant to be constructive, not derogatory.

Excellent scene you’ve created there Al! All the various elements look great especially the Tiger, I love the house and civilians just taking it all in.
