A Vietnam survivor: M551 in the Gulf

Very nice. It looks great. One comment though, the ammo cans on the turret would most likely have been green, not the same color as the hull.

Very nice build indeed.

Most likely yes. Not impossible though. See can can on back:

Or this:

Krylon flat colors were around in the 80’s.
Plus, while the vehicles were being painted locally, it wouldn’t have been hard to say, “Paint these too so we can be matchy matchy.”

Never trust a soldier with a can of Krylon.

I’d say roll with it. It’s perfect they way you did it.

I’m talking about the .50 cal cans that most likely held ammo, not 40mm cans used for storage. Yes it is possibly, but not likely.

Like in the second photo? I don’t even see any green ones at all. :frowning:

The last photo was when they were getting ready to go home. The Sheridans arrived in the same NATO/MERDC that they wore in Panama.

I will say that the rucks should all be green and of the large type… standard issue for 82nd Airborne.

Since the vehicles were painted locally, the ammo cans could be too. If so, they would have/could have been painted in place on the vehicle. The straps would be painted as well.

An interesting idea would be to leave one ammo can off the vehicle, with the spot on the turret under it still showing the MERDC camo. The missing ammo can could then be in the .50cal mount, with one side still green.

Awesome idea!
(and a very reasonable explanation for why those cans seem to match the color of the turret)

No, more like a modeler who goes out and paints things different colors just to upset conventional “wisdom.”

To be fair my first idea ws to paint it with panama invsion camouflage; but later i found a picture of a sheridan moving in the desert without a wheel , so i decided to fully paint it in yellow.
