Another Academy M163 VADS

Looking really nice, Ron. Not too cluttered; i imagine it won;t stay uncluttered for long. LOL.

I don’t know if you fix it at this point, but you have the linkage for extending the trim vane installed upside down.

Tamiya extra thin quick-setting is my go-ro for unwelding welded parts.

Then that is wrong in the instructions?
I’ll see if I can fix that. Thanks!

OK, I double checked, and you did follow the instructions. Academy got it wrong, both in the instructions and how that part is molded. There should be a handle (simulated by a small bump) on the upper side in the middle, right where the ejector pin mark is. Academy has it molded on the other side, which is down when installed following the instructions. Here are a couple photo showing the part done correctly on a Tamiya kit:

The part itself is not very well molded, and what should be a large handle is just a small bump. AFV Club did a much better job on theirs, and so did Italeri, but that don’t help you out.

Here is an image showing the actual trim vane lowering/raising arm in the open position.

Tamiya molded it poorly as well. Where they have a raised lip should be a handle with the right side open.

@SableLiger @HeavyArty Thanks guys! Those really help a lot. Time to add some more details then.

I tried my luck at painting a pattern without masking.
Did not go well. I had rivers of overspray, no matter what I did to setting or paint. The airbrush spit like an angry cat. Some moisture too!
I ended up touching up and repainting so much I might as well have done the entire thing by hand.

Colours are;
Tamiya XF-61 dark green as a base
Hataka A213 earth red
Hataka A041 night black
Tamiya XF-51 olive drab for the gunbody.

It’s looking really nice with some paint on it.

I wrote an article about superdetailing Tamiya’s M113. It was published in AMPS Boresight vol.8 nr. 5, september 2000. Unfortunately, the AMPS e-board decided to not digitize the issues prior to march/april 2009 as they felt “that for the most part, much of the information was outdated and not all that useful to our members.” So, all I can offer is a picture of the page with the vehicle front detail shots - perhaps that’ll help you to copy my operative trim vane extension arm.
Happy modeling!

How hard would it have been for them? Non thinkers.

I suspect they didn’t because scanning magazines and cleaning up the scans so they’re more usable is a ton of work. For historical reasons it would be good if they did scan them and put them online, IMHO, but I can see why they would stop at a certain issue.

Airbrushing has given you that great “soft edge” to the camo. Difficult to achieve with a paint brush.

(For me anyway)

Nice job

I am on a paintingstreak now.
I also added stowage to the front and worked on the accompanying camouflagenet.

With a few builds off the table it is time to continue with this one: decals and first weathering in place.

And it is done as well.
Weathering has deliberately been kept light and the camouflagenet is from AK, being the type I, painted in NATO colours, shaped with diluted PVA glue.
