APC Guntruck query

Morning all, I’ve got the King Cobra kit, hoping to do it as Peace Train, the one I saw at Pleiku. I was looking at the instructions and had a few questions about parts they say to use. My belief was that they stripped the APCs of most usable parts for reuse and to reduce weight. The items I wonder about on the assembly instructions are, first of all the fuel tank, but also the steering levers, storage bin, driver’s seat, gauges, periscopes and blackout light on the front. Any one have any ideas on if these were removed or left in/on? Thanks for any thoughts or info. Wayne

I’ll be following along as I have this kit in the short list to build too.

I believe they would have taken whatever was not needed out to make as much room for ammo as possible.

My thoughts would be reduced weight, usable parts, plus, why would you keep a tank full of fumes in there?

Bumping this up as I hope it will help others in the future builds. I am planning to use the Tamiya kits as I have a couple and they are cheaper than the AFV Club ones. If anyone has any info it would be appreciated. As far as I can tell from pictures everything, including trim vane, rear fenders, lights, tools and non essential stuff was removed including the suspension parts. On the inside all motive equipment and controls, fuel system and driver station would be stripped out and probably replaced with ammo and personal gear and commo. These are just my observations and if anyone has better info I would love to have it. Always been something from my time and hope the info is not lost for others. Wayne

I agree that most non-essential removable items would have been taken off. I stripped out the interior on my King Cobra that I did about 20 years ago.

Also, how was the turret moved and what was the power source for the radios and miniguns, when used? Wayne

The turret? Do you mean the commander’s cupola? That was turned by muscle power  I’m guessing power for the electrical equipment came from batteries, or possibly direct from the truck’s electrical system? A minigun needs 28 volts, though, so just one or two regular batteries won’t do.

Yes the cupola was what I meant, the term kept eluding me when I was writing, oldtimers kicking in! ha ha Wayne

Would the truck’s electrical handle the extra draw, possibly via the slave cable connections? Wayne
