Atreides Ornithopter in 1/200 scale

Hi guys!

Here comes my ornithopter of the Ducal Armed Forces of House Atreides from “Dune”.

An ornithopter is an aircraft that has technically adapted the flight technique of a dragonfly. Combining the maneuverability of a helicopter with the speed of a turboprop aircraft, this is a multi-role aircraft. In various versions, ornithopters serve as combat aircraft, reconnaissance aircraft, and transport aircraft, and can be used in any terrain and in any weather.

During the brief reign of House Atreides over Arrakis (Dune), most of the ornithopters in the ducal fleet were destroyed or captured by the Harkonnen.

My model represents a combat ornithopter of the 3rd Assault Battalion of the Ducal Atreides Armed Forces on Arrakis.

The kit is from Meng and promises a quick and easy built thanks to its small number of components and excellent fit.

Due to the Atreides’ relatively short tenure on Arrakis, I held back on the weathering. However, I still tried to do justice to the environmental conditions.

The Harkonnen counterpart will also be released…

According to the interior views of the full-size prop model used in the movie, there is the pilot, and co-pilot up front, and a hold behind them with seating for 4 - 6 passengers/crew which opens directly to the large loading ramp at the rear. Where are the motors/apparatus for activating the wings inside the ship? With 4 wings to activate, the engines and fuel for that should take up most of the available room.

I gave up trying to make sense of the Dune universe. I don’t think Herbert had a clue himself beyond the religion and politics.

Anyway, @BigZimmo great work on the 'thopter. Very nice finish. It’s too easy to over weather these models but I think yours has come out great.
I picked up this one, the Harkonnen 'thopter and the spice harvester not long after release. Then they got boxed up when we were doing some work on the house and I still haven’t found them! They’re really nice little kits and well priced given how expensive movie tie in models are becoming.

Looks great and nice subtle weathering.

The black windows and the exterior detailing don’t make this kit appear like a wargaming piece. Some 3D printed kits without windows have the tendency to appear blocky and toylike.
