I’m curious about this genre’ of scale modeling, what is the appeal here, who is the individual that is intrigued by commercial airliners, is it for transport pilots active or retired, are the colorful paint schemes the allure or the historical aspect of the evolution of passenger aircraft? I’ve noticed that Sprue Brothers carries an extensive line of these planes and even luggage tags, I know we have one member here that builds/collects these, not judging just curious.
Typically very colorful; used all over the world in different facets; the thrill of flight, almost regardless of where you live in America, you will see at least one airliner everyday; the scale is for shelf space. Even a small puddle jumper jet in 1/72 would take up a lot of space.
If you think about it, why do any of us build what we build? We all have different reasons. Mine originated from wanting to go into the military but was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 10. No military career in my future, so I build it in scale models. I build military, almost exclusively. I do have 2 motorcycles and one car, as those are vehicles I will never own, or probably drive.
When it comes to my military models, I don’t do anything prior to the Vietnam War. I am very interested in WW2, but I like the newer stuff. When I first started attending shows, the only armor on the tables was WW2 and almost all German. I build modern vehicles. For the longest time at shows, mine were often the only modern vehicles on display.
We build and collect what we like and what interests us. Enjoy the build!
I did indeed think about this as I was writing my query, I remember my first airline trip on a Delta Airlines DC9 and I remember seeing a built model of one in the gift shop at the airport, I was already bitten by the modeling bug at age 10 and the DC9 model looked awesome! Shiney and smooth and it just looked solid, nothing like my collection of Monogram Pacific Fleet planes.
Darren @CMOT I hope to see pics of your build soon and maybe some of your other Strato-buses as well.
