Battle of Gazala 1942

I’ve completed a diorama about the battles of Ghazal.
I made a lot of mistakes while making this diorama. But I also learned some new techniques.

Hi Pavel! Thanks for sharing this work. The builds of the vehicles are very nice and the weathering is lovely!

If I may suggest two things for future works like this (and please don’t take these as criticism but suggestions only!) is firstly to have the figures reflect the vehicles. What I mean is the vehicles have a good layer of dust which looks right for Gazala, but the figures are quite clean. Maybe some dust, particularly around the boots and lower limbs?

Secondly some of the figures may need their feet to be placed more firmly into the base. I see you’ve got tank track marks showing where the vehicles have moved, and in their parked locations the vehicles are ‘sitting’ in the base. Looks good. Some of the figures though are placed on the base and look like they’re floating.

It’s tough as it’s a busy scene with lots of figures, but may I suggest that when you plan the build, consider where you want to put the figures on the base before building. Later, when you’re doing the last layers of plaster, paint or sand on the base, get the feet of the figure and put it where you planned so that it leaves a foot mark. Wriggle it a bit so the foot mark is a tiny bit bigger than needed. This is to make sure the figure’s foot can fit once all the final painting and weathering is done. Then when the base is done you can easily put the figure in its place. If the foot hole is a touch too big, any gap can be filled with dust or sand.

Suggestions only mate as it’s a nice scene with loads of work having gone into it.

I made it out of thin wire.

Thanks for sharing. I really appreciate it. It’s good. Yes, if I may, I concur that the feet should be a little deeper into the sand. Other than that, I am an amateur compared to this piece.
