Battleship Tsesarevich

Something else I noticed in the 1915 and other photos. The model kit has many plate lines on the hull side that will need to be sanded down. The photos show no panel lines.

The Port Arthur painting shows a different version of the masts than other 1904 images,

This is how Trumpeter depicted the joints of the sheathing sheets. For the 350th scale, this is very exaggerated and it all needs to be cleaned up in a good way. On board, the portholes are also oval because of the technology. Here’s another good construction, while in the process: Эскадренный броненосец "Цесаревич" в 1904 году, пластик 1/350 — Каропка.ру — стендовые модели, военная миниатюра

Masts and other major changes were made mainly after the end of the war

So, during the battle he was black or white?
If black, what shade?

I think I have figured the reason parts of the bulwarks were removed. He was commissioned in 1903 and the war was in 1904. I think the blast of the guns was the reason. Shots over the side put the end of the barrels to where most of the blast went over the side but to the rear or rotated forward meant some of the blast was captured by the bulwarks. Removing those portions must have reduced those problems. Could be the observers in the rear tower were getting hammered by the concussion reflection

No black. No way!
White before the war. During the Russian-Japanese grey olive. I gave a link to the Tsarevich’s construction site above. The same author has several models of the same first Pacific squadron, which included the Tsarevich

No. The bulwark was removable. And after the war there is it can sometimes be seen in full

Black is the second Pacific Squadron. It consisted of battleships of the Borodino type, built on the basis of the Tsarevich’s project. Because of this, they are sometimes confused

Wooden decks. I see some experienced builders using them. Not having used one before, are they worth it? If so is one brand better than another or are they about the same between the brands? Any do or don’ts with wooden decks?

Just an odd idea, I was in W H Smiths the other day and they were knocking out issue one of a part work for a 1:200th Titanic for just a couple of quid. It’s just the forecastle deck but it comes with a self-adhesive wooden deck. For that price it might be worth getting just as a trial piece rather than make an expensive kit and wooden deck your first experience.

Cheers,

M

I used to. I enjoyed it.

But it has its own nuances. If you are doing well with the coloring, then you can do without it. The best and correct deck for the Tsarevich at the Microdesign Деревянная палуба броненосца "Цесаревич" (Trumpeter)

But Chinese manufacturers have thinner decks and are easier to use.

So if it was a gray green color, what shade or color is this? Who makes this color or has a mix ratio for the color?

Looks rather like field grey German uniform colour at fist glance.

This model is painted tamiya XF-58

German uniform and RLM02 in my opinion, not quite the right choice, but they also have the right to apply

P.s. Yellow pipes are wrong

Guess what showed up in the mail today!

Here is what is surprising.

Notice it is smaller than the 1/700th scale Yamoto.
The hull is just over 12 inches

Hey this is actually the model i built, it was my first ship! Well almost built since it suffered an accident when i got an idea to paint the linoleum decks using enamel wash which damaged the paint job (the paint peeled off in large scabs) and i trashed it. The color was tamiya olive green + some buff if i remember right, the funnels are indeed wrong but they looked more interesting that way to me at that time so i went with it. The camera color correction makes the funnel look more orange than they did irl, the hull color might have been more greenish irl and lay grayish.
On a positive note i got another copy of this kit and pretty much finished building all sub assemblies, experience from previous time was helpfull and i came up with much better division of the model into sub assemblies which makes the build better and will make painting much easier. I will make photos and share some tips since i basicly built this model twice already lol.
As for the colors green and white were peace time colors and war time colors were red and green. This time i am going with fully historical paint scheme.

There was some confusion where masts and funnels were thought to be lighter color but it was light and shadow confusing people on some black and white photos. Here are some nice pics i founds, the first one is pretty rare, i don’t see it often.

Trumpeter does this Kit and so does Zvezda. I have seen both and prefer the Trumpy Kit. Eduard does some P/E for this Kit and that is what I will be using when I build mine…Cheers mark

Zvezda does Borodino class not Tsesarevich. Trumpeter kit comes with an extensive pe set and i haven’t seen aftermarket one (it would be pretty redundant anyway).
Borodino class was based on Tsesarevich, they had same general layout but they varied significantly. Tsesarevich was a better ship, with thicker armor, better rangefinders etc.
