Really finishing up nicely John. I like the grimy look. You’ve tied in that red really well.
Yeah I probably will do that Brian, a uniform green would maybe be a bit unrealistic as there will be slot of grass on this one.
Thanks Matt, I do like the red on this… It almost makes me want to do the real Warrior safety version all in red.
Really like the weathering John and, imho, not overdone, least not by my standards,
, your work is nice and subtle,
.
As for grass, you could try making your own from teddy bear fur, I tried it on my last braille scale project and it worked fine. The good thing about it is that you can colour it as you want and have it any length you want, even varying it simply by trimming as necessary, . I could let you have a piece if you wanted to experiment,
?
G,
I did think about that, is it easy to get hold of ? The finished product on your bocage base looked lovely at the end …
And thsnks for the well received kind comments and continued support
I got mine via amazon, but ebay would be an option, just search for something like ‘teddy bear fur fabric’, it comes in various ‘sheet’ sizes and prices.
I ordered 15mm pile in a grey-brown colour, which gave a scale height of over a 42" (1000mm +) in 1/72nd, but would be just over 20" (500mm +), but they do other colours and lengths.
I would tend to get longer than you need, especially as any trimmings can be used as further static grass.
The teddy bear fur method is what Jerry uses in his Epsom diorama, he might be able to provide you with more information if you ask him. But I’m quite happy to let you have a small piece to practice on before you spend any money if you’re unsure.
G,
But just think about those poor abused bears, mistreated and held in tiny cages, half-starved and cruelly shaved to satisfy the whims of heartless modellers…
…and dyed green! The horror!
But if the bear has been mistreated and shaved by the delectable Nicole Kidman (see first Paddington movie) then it would be worth it Tom…hell! I’d let her mistreat and shave me,
.
G,
John. Against my better judgement, I have agreed to purchase another Accurate Armour kit from a club member who sent us an email. When I was looking up which version he was selling, this popped up in my search and I thought you might get a chuckle:
Yeah, I said I would never buy another old AA kit, but is was $30 AUD - that is less than 16 Quid - a 1/4 of the current price.
I’ve seen the images of the real ferret online in that scheme. I really wouldn’t fancy bouncing about the prairie in one of those on a dark night lol… That must a real old one you have there, but for 16quid it’s worth it even if it does have issues
So take it for what it’s worth but I may have an answer for you.
Currently reading the Chally 1 section of the Osprey British Battle Tanks: Post War Tanks 1946-2016 (Dunstan, 2020).
From the inset on p. 189
The red metal rectangular device at the commander’s cupola indicates the tank is ‘at action’. A white circular one denotes that it is not ‘at action’ and has no live ammunition loaded in any of its weapons.
Thanks Don, but I wouldnt take that as a cert at the moment … That is what we used green ones for and green flags in UK/Germany to show the tank is clear and nothing is loaded … I may email someone in BATUS and ask them direct … I am 90% sure I have seen an image with all 3 colours on the turret so still unsure … They could of done away with the green markers as the firing takes place on the prairie and there is so much green they may have decided safey wise they are to difficult see and replaced them with white… I will do a bit more research when I get a chance to find the BATUS contact list in work.
Just to get in the mood for reading a thread about red Tops & Batus, the stereotypical Canex beer (couldn’t find any Labatt’s)
Lol… Good old Molsons… I cannot even contemplate how much I sunk of that in cheetahs hehe.
Edit, Max, can you remember what the marker was called on the area that had 45 gallon drums on top to look like a can of coke and a Sprite and another type. ?
I haven’t drunk Molson’s since '92 which was my last UN tour in Cyprus and found some today. Used to be able to buy it at the Canex in the UNPA in Nicosia but then the Canadians left in "93 I think it was. There used to be a square container painted like an Oxo cube and I remember the coke tin but not much else. There were the towers with the letters and numbers on them.
Will be able to get back on track with this soon. Have ordered some 12mm, 6mm and 4mm summer and autumn grass flock which will be my prairie grass.
Will also try and incorporate another obvious shout out to BATUS on the scene…more to follow
John the towers are Nav markers and I think Coke tower is/was in the Cambrai or Kap Yong area of the training block. OXO is located in Coriano off of Hussar trail close to Rorke’s Drift. There use to be an actual OXO factory near there many moons ago.
Cheers
TJ
Cheers Todd, I knew they were Nav marker posts, but couldn’t remember what the third can was on Coke tower …or if they were numbered or we just referred to it as coke or Oxo tower…I’m sure the third one was an orange colour… I never knew about the Oxo factory though…
Do you have access to any images of the Nav marker towers … The coke or Oxo one ?
I’m also desperately trying to remember where I stored an exercise map of the BATUS TRG area… Im hoping it’s in a box in my garage…
John this is the only picture I have of the Coke tower. It is from Peter Breakspear, a 17/21Lancer.Taken in the eighties at BATUS when they were part of the RAC safety. He was the commander of C/S Safety 23.
