Well, there have been a few tumultous months behind me, but I did work on the boat.
It is very useful to take a look at photos as you see the issues much more clearly, so it is great for me, too. The photos themselves were not taken under studio circumstances, so the lightning and all are pretty substandard.
(The clear sheets are only dryfitted yet, so the fit is not perfect.)
I got some 3D printed coffee mugs and plates, also two buckets, not to mention a 8.7cm shark to add to the boat.
I am pretty happy with the faded paint, and the wood texture, not so much about the tiny details and the paint blob on the front rod going from the hull to the nose of the ship. The yellow barrels need some more work. The colors are not very clear in the movie; the base color could be anything from faint green to faint grey;the Orca on the back could be anything from black to copper (and the decals are yellow). I went with what I liked best.
There are some painting issues I can see, but any constructive feedback is welcome.
Awesome work!
Thank you. I am less than happy with some of the painted detail - the black frame of the front cargo doors is somewhat wobbly, and I am trying to do a weathered boat, but sometimes it is difficult to find the balanced between the “shobby paintwork”, and the “weather beaten boat” look. (I am coming from building mostly land-dwelling machines, so the approach is somewhat different.)
The faded red paint looks OK, though.
Another issue: the top of the cabin (the flybridge) does not fit well onto the sides of the cabin- there was a 2-3mm gap between the back (which is a resin piece) and the flybridge. It is not my first resin/PE kit, so I do have some experience, but I am still not sure where it went wrong. The PE cabin sides fit perfectly on their base, so the difference does not come from there. It may be a fit issue or I made a mistake somewhere. I had to fill in the gap, which was considerable in this scale, so it is not a perfect solution.
(Photos will follow soon(ish).)
I will need to find it a nice display case, though. I hope trumpeter makes one that fits.
OK, the photo conditions were less than ideal (did not have time to set up the booth), but it is still useful to spot issues. The boat is far from ready -the rigging is not very simple to do. I can1t make much sense of the instructions, so I am trying to figure out how to do it by looking at photos from the movie.
I will have to touch up the barrels - they are small, so by naked eye they look OKish, but up lose you definitely need to add more yellow. Otherwise getting there I think- any and all suggestions would be welcome. (I also will need to find a display case that can accomodate the model.)
Ps. confession time: one of the lifebelts were swallowed by the carpet monster…
Your going need a bigger workbench.
I understood that reference.
Excellent model!
P.S.
Nostalgia.
I watched the movie with great pleasure.
We called it “Death Among the Icebergs”.
Awesome work! I especially like the blood on the stern
OK, I finished the boat as much as I could. The tough part was the rigging - the instructions were not very clear on the exact layout, and after a while I decided to give up on trying to figure it out using the movie. I am not happy with some of the painting, but overall it turned out well -looks much better in real life. I had a shark 3D printed -calculated that Bruce would be about 8-9 cm in this scale. Further 3D printed items are the buckets, and some plates on the table.
Overall this is an incredibly nice model; the only real issue I ran into was the fit of the flybridge. I still am not sure what went wrong there, so when you build it, make sure you check whether there is a gap there before gluing.
Nice, now all we need is the Andrea Gail to go with it…
Cheers,
M
Well done.
I think Bruce practiced what he preached, the fish were his friends and humans replaced them for dinner.
I really like what you have done. You should have a small speaker playing the Ladys of Spain.
spongya77-Congratulations on finishing the build! It looks really nice. You did a good job on what appears to be a fairly complicated kit. I think the weathering on this ship is pretty hard to duplicate. You should be very pleased.

Thank you for your kind words. The model is great, it was not a struggle (apart from the gap issue), so I can wholeheartedly recommend it.
Beautiful work, Andras! My compliments on your very atmospheric build.
