Building the 1/16th. Puma from Das Werk

Hi Donald,

looking at the kit and instructions, is there anything to suggest future variants? I’m keen on a /1 or /4, just not so much the 5cm /2, being the most popular with modellers.

Given that the 251/22 Halftrack is to be released soon so Das Werk will have the Pak40, and given the interior parts that Donald has highlighted, the 234/4 is pretty much a foregone conclusion.

Thanks for this thread! I pre-ordered mine and it’s sitting waiting for me to set up my hobby room. Can’t wait to start it. I’ll be watching your progress like a hawk!

Well looking at how the kit is laid out , there are a lot of possibilities.
I think the most likely would be the variant with the Pak. 40 , I mean they are going to have the gun in the Pak Wagen so why not a turret to hold it here.
Another version they could change the upper hull and make it a Radio Car.
There are lots of possibility’s here and the very detailed lower hull why not exploit them?
The interior has some nice detail but it can’t be seen on a turreted version.

Just a quick correction not my mistake but the instructions show
L31 & L32 reversed and pointing in the wrong direction.
On page 17 the Convoy light is shown on the wrong side, it should be on the Left side.
On page 18 one is shown on both sides, this is wrong as there should be only 1 on left side.

Parts H25 & H26 are shown the wrong parts, they only fit one way/

Thank you, gents. I am hoping this is the case, and was looking for signs like flashed over holes in the hull, or unused parts on the sprues.

Looking forward to seeing your kitty finished, Donald.

The biggest issue with the kit jerry cans is they all have the same number! This was the serial number so when numbers were present (they were not on all cans) they wouldn’t be the same.

One thing nice about the After Market Jerrycans is , one is marked for water , and one is in the rack with the pour spout down instead of up. Very nice.

Very nice work so far. I have this kit, I hope to get to it soon (HA!).

I did not like the muzzle when I looked the kit over, so I made a new one that I think looks better. What are your thoughts on the kit piece?

I think that the kit part is very basic, The company that I purchased the Jerrycan’s for the fenders has a really nicely detailed Muzzle Break, but being a little short on cash I had to cut some corners

Is the vertical piece painted green on the back side of the cans a mounting bracket? Was it metal? Will the water can get a white cross later?

Dude, you’re like a Rock Star of model building. Knocking out more hits than anyone I know.

I’m not Shure which part you are asking about, but if it is the small piece sticking up on the bottom of the can in pic. #126 then yes it was metal and would be painted the same color as the vehicle.
Actually the mount to hold the cans was all metal with thinner gage metal for the straps.
I wasn’t going to paint the water can with a white stripe as this wasn’t always done and would draw attention from an enemy .

Unfortunately, the tires are the biggest issue with this kit. The tread pattern was basically never used on the Puma. So far, after looking through dozens of Puma photos, I have yet to find a single tire with this pattern. According to AFV Modeller, they have found photos of only two vehicles where a Puma is partly fitted with this pattern. This pattern is that seen on the Sd.Kfz. 234/4, which Das Werk inevitably plans to do since they have the Pak 40 with the Sd.Kfz. 251/22, so they obviously produced the tires with the intention of using them for the 234/4. But it is disappointing, considering the cost of a set of tires from AFV Modeller, Pimp My Miniature, and others I am sure. Sol Model has released an inexpensive set (i.e. about half the price of the other two), but the tread pattern is a bit suspect, as is the shape of the rim, but it’s hard to tell in the photos on their website.
