Chieftain Mk 11 BATUS info

I know more than a few members here spent time at BATUS. I now live in Texas but lived a few hours from BATUS for 25 years so I am interested in vehicles that spent time there.

I have a challenger 2 I am going to do in BATUS camo. I just ordered a chieftain mark 11 I am also going to do in BATUS scheme. I would love any photos anyone could share.

I also had two main questions for now.

  1. I am assuming the thermal observation and gunnery sight (TOGS) was used as part of the gunnery training. I am thinking of modeling a scene during exercise with the sight door open. However, the instructions seem to be a bit lacking on the colors of the inside and I find pictures a bit hard to come by. Probably bad googling on my part.

  2. did the chieftains at BATUS ever employ camo nets or foliage? I would love to do one with barrel like this

Or something similar

TIA

  1. I will PM you some images of the TOGs compartment inside.
  2. Rarely used cam nets in BATUS unless we broke down. Pretty much always on the move. Avoid putting cam nets on a BATUS wagon (on the barrel). These were usually found more on BAOR and UK based wagons and they would be parts/cut off section from a spare cam net, not a full one. Not all units did this though. No foliage … there isnt any at BATUS lol.
  3. images of Mk11 in BATUS are rare. I have only seen a few. Dont be mistaken by UK based OPFOR Chieftains which have pretty much the same cam scheme.

Just ask about anything else, here or in a PM. Happy to help.

Thanks kindly for the PM the images are most helpful. Roger on the CAM net. Agree the closest tree to BATUS is probably miles away lol!

Just a quick image of the nets that used to be used at BATUS when Chieftains were in use. Basically just mesh nets. I believe now though they use a sand version of standard cam nets as per what’s in the Warriors hull basket.
