Chino model announces a set of 3D printed German awards
There are a couple of issues with the German Cross in Gold or Silver, top row second from the left (known colloquially as the “Fried Egg”). Although the centre of the design did feature a swastika, the centre was then infilled with resin, so the surface would appear smooth, not with a raised swastika. After the model piece was painted, it would need a coat of clear varnish to duplicate this effect. The award was made in three pieces, there was a smaller blackened “sunburst” attached over the outer one, not present on these pictures.
Considering its size (must be some 2mm diameter), it would be nearly impossible to paint a half decent swastika if it was not moulded-printed raised, so from a modeller point of view, I think they chose the correct way, I do not see it as a mistake.
I accept your point. You will see in my post that I propose a “fix”, to flood the centre of the medal with varnish to duplicate the full size effect. To be honest, I could have done with this set recently when building a figure representing a specific person who had received this award.
