CVR(T) Striker - C Sqn HCR

Hi Johnny
Just wondering how those mesh screens are attached on the full size vehicle - bolted, wired or somehting else?
Need to do similar on my 1/16th Scorpion.

Mal

There have been a few variations, initially they had a thin strip of metal around the edges like a frame and were spot-welded in place I think upto the diesel conversion; and then the introduction of the higher/raised vents on the engine and gearbox decks they became an integral / built in part of the deck and were delivered like that.

Thanks Johnny
Most of the walkrounds I’ve looked at either lack the screens or are looking at everything but the screens.
I’m doing the NZ version, with handles rather than bolt ons. Not much in the way of walkrounds for in service NZ vehicles either.

True, they are rarely seen.
If you go for the spot weld early add on’s the spot welds were roughly like this, and not totally uniform.
It’s only a rough sketch and the big blue oversized dots are the spot welds.

And if it’s a very early Scorpion, they may not even of had mesh grills fitted.
When we moved back to UK in early 1990, a fair few of our wagons didn’t have them fitted. Hope that helps @AfvAficionado

Hi Johnny
Cool, hadn’t considered welding. The NZ ones are all late builds - they have engine grilles with handles - not the bolt ons. When it comes to the mesh shields, from the photos I have, there is a mix - no mesh at all, mesh on the lower grilles only & mesh on all grilles. I’m leaning to the all mesh option.

Hi Mal, when I say late builds I meant the extended life program refit when the UK CVRT fleet had several upgrades including converting from Jaguar petrol engine to the diesel ones. On those the actual engine and gear box decks have different grills/louvres which are built in with higher edges and also built in mesh grills. They also have an armoured bulge on the RH hand hull side next to the engine. I don’t see any of those things on the NZ Scorps so they won’t be late builds. The handles that lift the decks were never changed or altered.

In the pics I looked at of NZ CVRTs I saw most did not have mess covers on the engine decks but only on the gearbox and air cleaner intake (that’s the small square one on gearbox decks) and those grills appear to me to be the early spot welded type… Hope that helps. John

My unsolicited 2 cents. For the pre-LEP period, Scorpion and Scimitar initially had early pattern engine decks where the front section had to be unbolted and removed to access the air filters & transmission. Late pattern engine decks had hinges at the back of the front panel. All the plastic kits have the late pattern engine deck. Jaguar & Castoff used to have resin early pattern top hull pieces but Scorpion Miniature Models is the only option now.

I wish someone did a LEP Striker for Op Telic but it looks likes I’m going to have to modify the Accurate Armour kit.

The Scimitar I had for my "94 Bosnia tour had early bolt on transmission decks and also didn’t have any mesh screens on the transmission or engine decks.

In regard to the decks on an LEP Striker they are the same as on a Spartan, only the Transmission deck louvres are raise. The engine decks stay the same. Here are some LEP Spartans to give you an idea.

Of course your quite right Max… I should of clarified that earlier. I was getting a bit fixated on the NZ Scorps Mal was on about.
And they are even higher than the Scimitar louvres.

Ref those Spartans, are they LD ones ?

Hi Johnny
Right, had forgotten about those. Strangely enough the Spyker Works Scorpion/Scimitar/Scorpion 90 has optional decks, guns, stowage to cover those. Fairly pricey, but a lot of options covered.

As Paul mentioned, I meant the hinged decks. Thanks Paul

Tried to add pics but too sure how - can’t see the option?

HI Johnny,

Yes they were in one of the hangars in Swanton Morley back in 2005 just as I was handing over my RGSS mantle. I found it strange that the two full desert wagons had Bowman fits and the wagons which had just been up armoured were still Clansman. If someone would produce a styrene Spartan in 1/35 I’d use those pics to up armour it, pretty obvious where it goes and fairly easy on a Spartan. An up armoured Scimitar would be a lot more difficult but Scorpion Miniature Models has a Plasan armour set but with BGTI and not E-Spire.

They look pretty good. I have never heard of Spyker workshops, I may have to look into them. I like the Scim LEP version.

I do like those Spartans. I was wondering about the radio fit out on the green ones, I thought I could just make out a clansman ABA on the RH shot, but then wasn’t sure as the desertised ones had Bowman fits.
I still have my fingers crossed that someone will do styrene CVRT range… I hoping someone will knock out the Ajax ones now as well.

I had a go at knocking together the replacement larger fire extinguishers that came in for BCF ones.

It sort of has the look but I think it needs very fine tuning…I know AA do a set of the new ones… I’m just to tight to buy them as I only really need 2…

Hi Johhny
Spyker is a small outfit in the states, apart from Scorpion - 3D Printed 1/16th FV101 Scorpion - RCU Forums - has a model snow blower that works, has done new tracks for the Dragon 1/6th Sherman - 1/6 Scale Sherman T48 Tracks - Delrin Injection Molded - Spyker Workshop - Page 2 - RCU Forums - and for the 21 Century M5 Stuart.

Those are the ones Robin, I could run amok on the SMM web page if I had the funds. Just a point to note is that BGTI was only fitted to close reconnaissance troop/platoons of infantry battalions and armoured regiments. Medium reconnaissance regiments were fitted with E-Spire. I was one of the development team for E-Spire at their facility in Taunton in the UK. It’s basically an upgrade of the system fitted to Bradley’s with a wider field of view and different symbology/gratical pattern.
