Das Werk 1/72-scale SM-U9 Query

Can anyone suggest the best material to use to replicate the various cables/ rigging lines on Das Werk’s ‘SM-U9’ submarine … bearing in mind that is scaled at 1/72?

Thanks,

Paul

The safest option would be

Ak interactive has also released elastic rigging threads.

You can also try 0.4 and 0.2 mm wires.

You can look for elastic threads and nylon threads on Amazon, Aliexpress etc…

Are these steel cables, or rope rigging lines? Very good scale rope is available here: https://ropesofscale.com/ Although you could also make do with coarse cotton sewing thread (I’ve used that on large scale sailing ship models). As a matter of fact, you can use the same thread painted a suitable metallic color (steel) for steel cables, and when dry, rub with wax to eliminate any “fuzzies”.
Note: I’ve found that thread with a high cotton blend will shrink slightly - this could work for you, or against you. If you anticipate this you can control the amount of tightness you want on your lines by wetting the thread with water, after installing the rigging (use a brush!) and letting it dry. If it’s still a little slack repeat.

I just took a look at the model sprues and instructions. The U9 has quite a bit of rigging wires compared to a WWll U-Boat. It might, in fact, be wiser to go with the EZ Line. or Uschi, but use the “Standard” gauge, although there won’t be any twisted cable detail - just a smooth line. You may also have to replace some, or all, of the plastic masts with brass rod, as the plastic ones are sure to bend or distort under the tension of the cables.
