Das Werk M1918 155mm Schneider Howitzer - High Speed

Are you all healed up now Rick and can get at it?

Dan, the shoulder is healing slowly. I no longer have my arm strapped to my waist. I’m two weeks into six months of physical therapy. I am able to build now but can’t yet use the airbrush. Fortunately I have three different electric sanders that allow me to continue to build without stressing the shoulder. Hopefully I can use the airbrush before I run out of dust free storage for my work in progress.

Could the Holt Caterpillar Tractor be correctly paired with this kit or does it need to revert to the spoked, wagon wheels type wheels?

Michael, the “high speed” designation was 1930’s lingo for “towed by a truck”. The wooden wheeled version was towed by the Holt tractors.

“High spped-low drag”

All things being equal, steel or solid rubber tires have a lower rolling resistance and require less force to pull. The “high speeding” came from a new drawbar and changing the axle to use tapered roller bearings instead of plain bearings. Solid wheels don’t handle bumps that well (especially at speeds above what a horse can do) and sink in soft ground, so they also changed to pneumatic tires.
