Desert Storm M1A1 Abrams Tank Color and Weathering?

Hi All,

I’m certain that this topic was covered at least once, if not many times, but I’m having trouble finding any threads/posts. I am contemplating starting my build of the 1/35 RFM 1991 Desert Storm Abrams, and I want to try to get as close to reality in terms of color and chipping/weathering as possible.

I recall that Gino (heavyarty) had written that most of the sand colored M1A1 tanks were originally painted in the 3 color NATO camo scheme, and that they were painted in a sand color once reaching the desert. I also recall that he’d;written that the local paint color was typically somewhat darker than CARC Sand/Tan. I think I have a handle on the shade of tan I’m going to use, but I don’t recall there being a discussion about chipping. Since the tan paint was something local, and not CARC, I’m assuming that paint would have been more susceptible to chipping or wearing away, and I presume that the color(s) that would show through would be the NATO tricolors. What I don’t recall being addressed is whether such chipping was highly present, and to what extent, or did the tan paint stay pretty much pristine due to the short duration of the war? Any help with this question would be greatly appreciated!

Some where sand color to start.

Marine M1A1s. I don’t recall seeing other M1’s with heavy chipping but I do recall some M60A1s with heavy chipping of local paint.

There was very recently a discussion in the thread entitled M1A1 3ACR Saudi Arabia 1990.
I used Testors radome tan for the color and it looked spot on to me.

Apparently the title of that thread may change.

As for the chipping, I have images of M551s where the paint has worn almost completely off. I would presume paint was obtained from similar stock.
