DKM Gneisenau 1/350

Dear all,

I wish you all a happy new year and all the best for 2024!

After only briefly checking your gentlemen’s fine build logs over the holidays, it’s time to start getting more involved and commenting again, and most of all, summoning the workers back from leave!

So here’s 2024 first update on Gneisenau.

Work on the funnel section continues.

More excellent stuff from gentlemen Steve aka Model Monkey - the SL-6 directors for the midship section and fantastic 140 cm searchlights. Simply great detail!

Assuming those platforms with up- und down ladder would be ‘sitting’ on the extruding part of the lower funnel structure forward, I first thought this way they would fit underneath that single piping on starboard side, that ends on the after edge of the funnel platform.
Well those assumptions were wrong, the PE parts need to be installed just a notch higher (and then really snuggly fit around the funnel shape), but then ‘collide’ with that piping. So I used artists license and cut and replaced that piping further aft, so it’s out of the way, kind of. The back part of the funnel seems to be rather different again between Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, but I decided to ignore that for the most part, possibly adding some rope reels and ammo boxes to conceal the differences later on.

Railings added to the platform. Four single 2 cm AA and two of the searchlights will find there place on the platform, some ammo boxes, and - the main mast, that I have to scratch build. I’ll use Master brass yard arms for that. Of course, the funnel cap is still missing. Possibly giving it all a preliminary coat of grey before adding more details, the mast should be black above the hight of the funnel cap, so that all will come later.

Well, let’s see, that should be a little bench time to spare the coming weekend, I hope.

With that, alle the best for now and as always, thanks for looking in and all comments welcome!

Cheers
Jan
