Eastern front fortifications

Ha, I thought they were aiming stakes!

There is an aiming stake to the left front of the mortar pit. It is cut into the ground so the dug in tube can see it. It is a thin white and red striped post.

I happened to notice that nearly all the hand grenades laid out for easy access are with the handle away from the soldiers. Intuitively, not having a whole lot of infantry experience, I would have thought they would get laid out with the handle toward the soldiers. Was it standard procedure for safety or other reasons to arrange them with handles out?

Without knowing a 100%, but I would of said it is possible they could be laid out that way as the arming mech is in the bottom of the handle - so in my mind, if I laid them handle away from me, it would possibly prevent accidents occurring by accidentally operating the arming cap ??

First consult the Book of Armaments, chapter two, verses nine through twenty one. Modern procedure is to have the spoon/ handle in the palm your throwing hand. The grenade is held close to your body (not outward like in the movies). Take off the safety clip. You pull the pin, verify you still have the pin, then lobeth the holy hand grenade of Antiok towards thy foe…

Placing the grenades in an order is a professional soldier (smooth is fast, fast is smooth), same as magazine direction in your chest rig for re-loading (what direction the curve is going) for left or right handed people.

Ha, I went back and looked and there it is! I see something new every time I look at your photos.

In reality I placed most of the stuck grenades like that because they prolly would’ve fallen into the ditch if the heavy part was at the top. Balance is better like this the way I show them. Grabbing them either way doesn’t mean much as the procedure was the same. Unscrew the end cap and yank the porcelain ball with the friction string attached. You can count a few seconds if ya wanna or throw it immediately. The egg grenades were different. I put quite a few in there as well. No pull ring on those like the kind on our pineapple grenades though.

Did their egg grenades have a ring like ours?

No pull ring. You unscrewed the cap on the top and then pulled the cap and the string it was attached to. Different color caps told you how long the fuse was. By wars’ end these were way more common than the stick grenade.

Thanks, I imagine also quicker to manufacture than wooden stick grenades.

Prolly so.
