Eduard's Royal Hybrid P-51B Build

Thinking that if you are using the pilot then the floor will be all but hidden under him. Interested to see how you progress none the less.

I have a couple of 1/16th vehicle kits to finish before I tackle mine, that said I just bought a Hurricane IIB after watching Phil Flory’s review I really am hopeless at self discipline LOL

Hi Keith

Yes, the pilot figure will definitely hide a lot if I install it. But, as I’ve no experience painting figures, it’s very much a learning opportunity for me and the result may well not be good enough to use. Either that, or I simply don’t make progress with it quickly enough.

That said, there’s so much detail to paint in the cockpit, I should be able to get a good idea if the figure’s going to be OK if I make a start on it tomorrow and work on it alongside the “office”.

All the best

Hi again

Today’s been a day of experimenting with painting the pilot figure:

I watched an excellent YouTube video that demonstrated using very thin “tints” of colour - perfect for a beginner like me when it comes to painting figures:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoN2m_c-wfY

Basically, it involves painting the figure overall black, and then spraying white from overhead as if it was a light source, accentuating the shadows for the colours to follow:

With that done, I started brush painting highly diluted coats of LifeColor acrylics, so thin they just tint the surface. And after multiple coats… something’s definitely beginning to happen:

I’ll carry on tomorrow, and while there’s obviously loads still to do, it’s an encouraging start. Make or break will be the face, though - that fills me with dread!

All the best

It looks well at the moment. Your braver than I.

If it were me I’d have started with the face so if it went all to pot I’d stop before it got too bad. The actual figure looks very very nice though with a coat of paint

Keith

Absolutely there is! It’s superdetail greeblies for a SciFi spacecraft scratch build. If that’s not your thing, donate it to one of your associates that can use it. At the very least, it’s going to be great for scenery in a SciFi diorama or vignette…
