Goran a new member on Aeroscale has sent in images of his superb build of a 1:72 scale Grumman F-14D Tomcat finished in the low viz markings of VF-101 'Grim Reapers'
The main source for building was the book “Uncovering the Grumman F-14”, with hundreds of fantastic photos, the ultimate book for Tomcat scale model builders:
Additionally - hundreds of photos from private collection (not published) were used to build all details without any improvisation and with full authenticity. It’s not possible to have it with any kind of commercial resin aftermarket set. Small part of private photos collection, as illustration, for interior detail:
No resin sets were used. For Hasegawa 1/72 F-14 no commercial set is available, and, even if it is available - it’s not possible to achieve this kind of authenticity, detailing and accuracy without scratch build. This model was done - wire by wire, pipe by pipe, rack by rack… one by one… no shortcuts, no improvisation. It took several years to build this Tomcat - but this model is unique, ultimate detailing, what was the goal. Using commercial sets can not give level of details and accuracy what I wanted with this model. Only scratch build.
The story of this build is long, and it will be fully presented in dedicated printed publication, which will contain many, many work in progress photos, and published in forthcoming months.
Thank you very much for your info and all references. Your project is awesome. I’m going to be building the Academy F-14A in 1:72 scale, also I’m going to use Black Dog resin parts. Wish me luck
Stunning model exhibiting much skill and effort but the title is misleading - it is not scratch built but highly modified with scratch built detailing.
