Fourth instalment of these notes. Armour and Tamiya last time; this one is Gunpla, because it is the one subject where “just order it locally” is genuinely wrong for a large slice of the catalogue, and it is worth being precise about which slice.
The ordinary catalogue is not the problem
Entry Grade, High Grade 1/144, Real Grade 1/144, Master Grade 1/100, Perfect Grade 1/60 - the standard grades are exported properly and your local shop can get most of them. If you are buying an HG Zaku, buy it at home. Nothing below applies to that.
Two tiers that stay in Japan
Gundam Base limited. The Gundam Base stores run their own store-exclusive versions of otherwise ordinary kits - clear-colour runs, metallic coatings, colour variants of a mould that is on every shelf in the normal release. They are not rare in the collector sense, they are just tied to a physical shop inside Japan.
Premium Bandai (プレバン). The web-exclusive line - complete sets, fleet packs, expansion kits, obscure variants that would never justify a retail run. Ordering is domestic-address, and the popular ones go to lottery or a short pre-order window and then never reappear except secondhand.
Both tiers are ordinary plastic. What makes them hard to get is a distribution rule, not scarcity, which is why the secondhand pricing is much saner than people expect.
What the domestic market actually looked like today
I pulled these live on 7 September 2026, so it is one afternoon’s snapshot rather than a price guide:

The interesting line is the third one. A clear-colour Gundam Base RG at 6,000 yen is roughly double the normal-release RG next to it - that is what a distribution wall costs on the secondhand market, and it is a lot less than the number people assume when they hear “store exclusive”.
Reading a secondhand listing
未組立 unbuilt, 組立済 already built, 未開封 still sealed, 箱破損 box damaged. Unbuilt-but-opened is the value sweet spot and is usually complete, but ask the seller to confirm the runners and the sticker/decal sheet, because that is the thing that goes missing. On anything with waterslide decals, assume a fifteen-year-old sheet may be brittle - it should change what you pay, not whether you buy, since replacements exist.
Also worth knowing: Bandai kits are moulded in colour, so an unbuilt secondhand kit with a tired decal sheet is far less of a problem here than the equivalent armour kit would be.
Freight, which is where people lose the saving
Kit boxes are light and bulky, which is the awkward profile. Carriers charge on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight - length x width x height in cm divided by 5000 - so a stack of HG boxes hits the volumetric ceiling long before it gets heavy. Two consequences: consolidating is worth more here than in almost any other hobby, because the fixed cost dominates and you are paying for air either way, and a PG box is a shipment on its own, so quote it before you commit.
One repeat from the Tamiya post since it catches people every time: paint, spray cans, cement and most solvent-based putties cannot fly. Buy the kits from Japan, buy the paint at home. Gunpla at least tolerates this better than most - the kits are pre-coloured and a snap-fit build needs nothing but nippers.
