I’m a long-time FSM user who is frustrated with yet another log-in issue on their site. I found this site and decided to move over here.
So this is my latest build, Airfix’s Hawker Typhoon Mk. IB
I’ve had this kit since it was released, I believe a decade ago. I held off even thinking about starting it after having built Airfix’s even bigger Mosquito about 15 years ago. That build stressed me to levels that I’ve never experienced in this hobby. I took serious (for me) time away from my bench after wrapping that one up.
As a result, there was nothing in the Typhoon build that came as a surprise. I went into it with the knowledge that it would take considerably longer than normal to complete it. I usually can wrap up a kit in less than a month, some times as often as a week if we’re talking about an old Monogram or similar vintage kit. The Typhoon took slightly more than 3 months, even with a week-long family vacation mixed in.
I didn’t build the Typhoon completely out of the box. I didn’t like the kit tires, so I added aftermarket tires for the kit. I also added PE grills for the chin intake. I also scratch-built pigtails for the rockets - cannot understand why Airfix didn’t include parts for that detail, especially in this scale.
The paints were mostly AK Interactive, a box-set designed for RAF WWII subjects. I also used some Vallejo and Tamiya as well. Weathering was Flory black wash, AK Interactive engine exhaust and engine oil stain, and ground black/brown/grey pastels.
I prefer my aircraft closed up as if ready for flight, but having spent the $$$$ on this one, I could not pass up showing off the power plant and opening up the gun bays.
Thanks for looking,
Steven
