I left modeling behind after high school, and recently picked it back up after my son wanted to try. When he lost interest half way through his P51, I dove in and started to go through my “vintage” kit stash. I found a half way done Academy M113A1 and finished it with some add on’s from Legend and Eduard. It still needs stowage but I’m going to take a break from it and start something else. There are many things I need to get better at, applying CA glue more cleanly, better weathering, getting the decals edge to disappear, etc etc. The colors of the desert uniform is off, just gonna leave it and learn from this mistake. If someone would recommend some out of the bottle khaki and light tan for the two shades, it will be much appreciated. Thanks to all who made suggestions on this built!
Six-colour desert camouflage had, well, six colours Two shades of sand and two of reddish brown, plusoff-white spots with black borders/shade lines. The later desert camouflage is three colours with a bit more contrast between the two sand shades than on the six-colour.
If you want, I can post photos of both, but not just now because it’s too dark to take good pictures of them at the moment.
Yes that is well understood, but the two brown shades and the black and white have much higher tolerance, especially at this scale and after washing and highflying, it’s the base light khaki and the almost invisible tan that are hard to nail down for me.
What the other guys have already said, it looks great. I’ve no idea about accuracy as it’s not my field, but I’d never have guessed this was done after a 30 year hiatus. It looks very convincing - if you’re open to suggestions I’d only say the entire running gear could benefit from some dust thrown against it. And maybe lighten the flesh tones…well maybe not, they could be very tanned or not of Caucasian heritage, either way don’t worry about it
Not even cultural background, just being a human. I have been building for 30+ years and there are things that I can and try to improve on, this is a great job for so long away from the hobby, if you are happy with what you have done then that is all that matters but also look at what others have done and if you see something you like either try to replicate it or ask for suggestions; we’re here to help.
Thanks for all the encouragements and suggestions, all valid and on point. Regarding the skin tone, they are indeed too dark. Only the driver is meant to be African American, and even he came out too dark. I have a tendency to get the skin tone right before doing the washing, which darkens everything too much. Next time will start lighter.
