News reports the missiles have been fired into Iran yesterday.
The footage taken shows HIMARS firing ATACMS
Different ordinance packages for different targets.
The Precision Strike Missile is still new…just entering production and the one with the new multi-mode seeker head to detect moving target is still in development.
Brilliant anti-tank rounds. (BAT) we’re around way back when I was doing the field artillery thing. They were able to track moving targets. The perceived need for them kind of went away with the focus on asymmetric warfare. So it should be a matter of refining existing technology.
Yes, I remember the BAT ATGM idea based on using acoustic microphones on its four wings to home in on the noise of (enemy) tank tracks moving and squeaking. BAT also has an IR thermal seeker.
Nowadays, with microchip and electronics miniaturization, Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM) has two nose seekers, millimeter wave radar and semi-active laser homing, and can be vertically launched from a tube (but JAGM is not in the HIMARS and MLRS payload family).
