A question for the Russian vehicle experts on here.
Do the Russian AF operate the Gaz Tigr family and if so do they carry any markings or colour schemes that identify them as AF vehicles rather than Army ones?
I recently completed an Oshkosh M-ATV in USAF Security Forces markings and as I have a Tigr in the stash, I was considering doing an equivalent type of vehicle.
I’m not an expert, but I’m Russian.
I was unable to find a direct indication of the use of this vehicle in the Russian military space forces. This does not mean that they are not used in aviation. They just don’t have a specific purpose there.
I also couldn’t find any special markings for the 1/35 scale models. Is this the scale that interests you?
There are decal sets for Military Police (Syria) and Military Vehicle Police.
Thanks for your reply Salekhard.
I am going through a phase of building models that relate to airfields (fuel tankers. service vehicles etc) so I was looking for a reason to build the Tigr in air force markings.
Thanks also for the information on the markings. However, I build in 1/48 scale (currently working on a Ural 4320 APA truck from Kittyhawk) and the Tigr is the kit from Suyata. The Military Police markings in red or blue are something I was already considering if I can’t find build it as an air force vehicle. I think I may have to design the decals myself because I can’t find any aftermarket sets in 1/48 scale.
I personally have not yet used their products.
There are no negative reviews on the page on the Russian social network VKontakte, where anyone can write anything. True, there are few positive ones, mostly questions and reactions to the release of new products. But here are the answers to the essence of the question: “Thanks ASK for the excellent decal. Excellent welding, thin backing, durable."
I wish I knew those two sets of ASK decals were available for the camo Tiger. I could have used the “V” or “O” decals. I have the Zvezda Tiger-M w/Arbalet and just getting around to finishing it. I painted on the V’s using a template. The V’s on the hood and left side door came out fine but then the airbrush starting spitting out condensation and ruined the ones on the right side door and rear door. The two ruined ones look like they were done with a paint brush but I have seen some done that way but not spray painted and hand painted on the same vehicle. I am not redoing them as I would have to repaint the doors so they are staying as is. The decals would have been a lot easier.
I contacted the manufacturer, he kindly sent a photo of the prototype. He has photos of the originals for all these decals. He doesn’t know exactly what this or that picture means. We agreed that this is just the creativity of people at the front.
It appears that this type of up-armoring was pioneered by the SpN component of ZVO(Central Military District), pictures of up-armored Gaz Tigr-M’s, marked with letter “O” showed up as early as April 2nd 2022.
Now the vehicle in question lacks the custom made turret (armed with Kord HMG), that is typical for ZVO SpN Tigr-M’s.
On the other hand- while it shows a prominent Z marking on the rear, it has an “O” included in the center of the triangle markings and the one on the RHS door was painted over a previous Z marking. This may indicate, that the unit the vehicle belonged to changed task forces.
Bearing in mind, that the picture was taken in the first week of December and there is no snow, I would say location is somewhere in the south, like Cherson or Zaporozhie region.
IMHO the three photos are of three different vehicles because the camouflage is different on all three, and the camouflage is underneath the armor plates.
The one from the decals of ASK has a non-standard camo, with some rusty brown spots sprayed close to the additional armor plates. The armor plates themselves are not painted, just rusty.
I’ve built a ZVO SpN Tigr-M couple of years ago:
And have collected some pictures to facilitate my build:
