Gruber's Little Tank

I am planning to recreate Gruber’s armoured car from the TV comedy series,‘Allo Allo’. As far as I am aware, the vehicle was based on a British armoured car (possibly a Humber?). Can anyone confirm or otherwise? Evidently, the vehicle was for some time exhibited at the ‘History on Wheels’ museum (perhaps still is).
Thanks,

Paul

Sounds about right.

A Humber armoured car Mk.II seems to fit the bill.

A Polish modeler describes how he did it:

Some Chevy chassis with Humber wheels? Use Google translate …

This website:

tells about the History on Wheels museum and their Gruber Sd.Kfz.
The author believes that it is based on a Land Rover chassis.

Neat idea! Apparently the museum still exists in Windsor, and still has the car - History On Wheels ~ Motoring, Militaria, Memories

A quick google gives a range of opinions on how the vehicle was built, with one even suggesting it used a Land Rover chassis. That might not be too far-fetched. I recall one episode where they use a pair of large doors on the rear to gain access…

[EDIT: Pipped to the post by Robin! Dang…]

Isn’t it just awful when that happens? Spending time and effort searching for data and then someone else takes all the glory? It has happened to me a few times and it does sting a bit.

I had the pleasure of meeting “Gruber” and his little tank, and the rest of the crew of the TV series, back in 2011 at the amazing War and Peace event held in Kent in the UK. An amazing event where thousand of re-anactors and vehicles gathered for a weekend show.

Although most of the vehicles present were genuine ones, renovated to working order, one or two were “replica’s”. I can’t comment on the provenance of the “little Tank” that Gruber was riding in at the actuall event, but thought you would appreciate the pictures!

And if you are interested in seeing all 825 pictures taken that day (excellent reference sources) you can go to my Flickr album here: Just click on the Hellcat picture below, and you should arrive at the whole album.
