Someone somewhere must have done a What If history about what would have happened if the Redcoats had suppressed the Revolutionaries. A whole heap of intervening events from the 1770’s onwards makes it hard to imagine, but the UK parliament effectively (not quite completely) banned slavery across the Empire in the 1830’s, compensating the slave owners (of course!) but not the slaves. Always wondered how that would have played out in the South – not well no doubt, but might just have averted the Civil War (?) Discuss ![]()

Yes, same in my neighborhood!
Probably not, it would have been a second war for independence. Slavery was a critical piece for successful plantations. The average southerner could not afford a slave, but slavery was rooted in how the south functioned.
I grew up just outside of Philadelphia and I don’t know how many hours I spent tromping around Valley Forge National Park. Excellent job with Washington and his cohorts!
