HMS CAIRO 1942, Operation Pedestal

This was a build I started over a year ago, and commissioned her a couple of weeks back. I didn’t blog the build, real life was getting in the way hobby quite a lot at that time. The build is based on the Thrumpeter 1/350 HMS Calcutta, like Calcutta Cairo was one of the rushed early conversions into an AA Cruiser. She had had at least one refit after the conversion, from photographs of the ship at that time some of the main differences can be spotted, and information from Raven & Roberts British Cruisers of WW2.

An overview, the repacement of the HACS’s with MkIIIs with 285 radars, the fore topmast reinstated with type 279 radars fitted to the fore and main topmasts, splinter sheiding around the gun positions. the quad 0.5 mgs mounts and the searchlights were replaced by single 20mm and two more aft of Y gun where the single 2pdrs were mounted when she was a light cruiser.

As the photgraphs I found the marajority clearly show the whalers swung inboard, I have no clear evidence if they were sat on racks above the skimming dishes or secured against the daviits. To me as a former seafarer as on a rack was more seaman like.

I know this may well not be completely accurate, and quite a few you shipmates out there know a vast amout more than me.Feel free to critisize.
