ICM SMS Konig

Hi All,
Anyone have any thoughts on this kit? Accuracy, detail etc.
Cheers
Mike

1/700, or 1/350?
 :canada:

Lol sorry 1/350th

I´m currently building the ICM König in scale 1/350. The kit is not very accurate, and doesn´t fit well (hull and deck parts). There is a lot of rework to do. If you have planned to use a PE set for the Torpedo Net, you will notice that the 28 torpedo net arms/holders are short by 3mm. So you have to make your own arms/holder. I´m using two different PE sets (White Ensign Models and GMM, a barrel set and the Wood Hunter wooden deck. The wooden deck doesn´t fit at the bow and all main turret barbettes. If you want to build just the kit oob without focussing on accuracy, the quality is okay.

Hello,
Thank you very very much for that information, I will certainly keep that in mind, I have now recently decided to build the Markgraf instead so hopefully the fit and detail are a bit better, though with them being sister ships ICM may have used alot of the Koneig’s parts on her.
Thanks
Mike

I have been on and off this model for some time now. I saw you changed to Markgraf which might prove a wise choice.

I am currently working on the hull plating, rivets and details.

I am also using the two photoetch sets mentioned above.

The most important thing is to get the forward superstucture to the correct lenght.

There is a very useful article here

You will also need to find details like the crane setup at the middle of the ship and keep in mind that there is a lot of rigging required.

She is looking really really nice, do you have a link to your build?? Thank you for the link to the other build too, I will certainly look at that when I get a chance.
Cheers

Unfortunately I have not documented the build but I can post photos and explain what and why I did it if you want.

Also something that came up to my mind right now, I have seen a couple of builds where people were confused with the front funnel assembly orientation, e.g. the fore and aft ends of the fore funnel

That is a very kind and generous offer, yes please that would be very much appreciated, it is always nice to learn and see.
Thank you

All four kits are the same by 95 percent. The only differences of their appearance are the years. So the bridges and main masts are different.

König 1914, Markgraf 1915, Großer Kurfürst and Kronprinz 1918.

But the main problem is that the models are not correct in their appearance/year.

So you have to do some research if you want to build an accurate model.

Thank you very much for that information.
Do you possiblly have any suggestions on books/site etc for references and photos by chance?
Thanks
Mike

I have searched the www for original photos and plans and had find two cheap german written books:

Marine Arsenal 26 - Die Schlachtschiffe der König - Klasse (good photos)

Koop Schmolke. Vom Original zum Modell: Die Linienschiffe der Nassau - bis König - Klasse (good side and top view plans)

I didn´t want to pay a lot of money for high priced books, because this build is a commissioned work. I´m more an IJN and Yamato nerd.

You can find good building reports with a lot of photos in german forums.

There are more german written books, which are going into more details like the two books I have bought.

Grießmer - “Linienschiffe der kaiserlichen Marine 1906-1918”
Staff - “German Battleships 1914-18 (2)”
Breyer - " Die Linienschiffe der KÖNIG-Klasse"
