Well done Tim - I think the rivets really add to your other efforts on the gun houses - now I am even more anxious to see them in paint !

Lovely work Tim :slightly_smiling_face:

PS That seems like a lot of gun house for a little gun :relaxed:

Can you get a bulk discount on rivets? You know there will be more than just on the turret. :zipper_mouth_face: Riviting the turret opens whole other layer of detail…I think there are more parts on the turret than on many aircraft kits.

Wow Tim,

what can I say? Just awesome!!

(May I say that I really can’t wait to see how you transform this level of detail to the rest of your build? :speak_no_evil: But I know you will - you always did with all your builds so far…)

Absolute stunning work!!

Thanks for the encouragement, guys!

I really like the look of the rivets on the gunhouses, but these things are definitely a job of work to apply. There are 65-plus lines of decals per gunhouse (34 separate single rivet lines, 31 lines of doubles, plus numerous rivets cut off the lines and placed individually to go around curves).

They are also fragile and fussy. For example, you can see in this picture that at the point where the rivet lines intersect near the five handgrabs the rivet line appears rounded – which is wrong! I had originally installed the lines correctly, but after applying the Solvaset decal setting solution a couple of the individual rivets melted free and drifted out of position (this has since been corrected).

I actually considered abandoning the rivets altogether and just going with the gunhouses as they were without the riveting… but comparing the two, the example with the rivets really does look better. Oh, well. This weekend I’ll get cracking on the other three!

I thought my rivet work was hard, yours is truly mind blowing!

The turrets do look much better with the rivets - sorry! No excuse now for not doing the rest

It looks fantastic!

Graham, you are right!

Yesterday I finished riveting the second of the aft gunhouses, and today I’m making a start on the forward two.

Truly beautiful work there Tim…looks amazing

Thanks John! The single-line rivets are now done, and I’ve made a start on the doubles.

It will be a bit more complicated fitting these vertical rivet lines to the forward gunhouses since each must be split to go around the horizontal stiffening strakes.

Still, slow but steady, I’m getting there!

Take your time. We’re “counting” on you. :upside_down_face::slightly_smiling_face:

A few additional single-line rivets finish off the forward faces under the guns.

I see in the photo that with all this handling I’ve managed to bend the roof rails on this one…

Tim,

just what everybody says - running out of superlatives here, too! Just stunning, great work! Can’t wait to seem them on the ship!

Thank you gentlemen! I hope you aren’t getting tired of these gunhouses, I’ll get them done soon - I promise!

…but while was getting ready to move along with installing the double rivet lines on the forward gunhouses, I noticed a couple of mangled brass step parts on my workmat – not good!

A quick review of the side ladders revealed no problems, but it turns out that in handling the gunhouses I’d knocked off the little steps at the backs of both the forward units. After having already knocked off footrails and bent the topside rails I was annoyed at having caused yet more damage, but at least none of these little casualties was all that difficult to fix. After some quick repairs it was back to the rivets.

Split up by the stiffening strakes on the front gunhouses, the fourteen double rivet lines on each side have become thirty three separate decals… times two sides… plus the fronts and backs… for a total of 75 separate double row rivet lines for the forward gunhouses alone. I’m on it, but it is gonna be a task to get all these properly oriented and correctly spaced…!

I can feel your pain about the caused damage, great that you recovered without any bigger problems. And I’m not getting tired of watching your gun houses in awe…absolutely stunning. I knew, in the very beginning, when you started your rather plain 1:200 kit, that you would perform that into something very special, and you are certainly doing that!!

Just a suggestion, and it won’t help on the gun turrets, but might do in later parts of the build. If there are other elements which have as much detail as you’re recreated here (and seeing the way you’ve built this, I’d suspect there will be!), then maybe add the rivet work first, and then do the handrails, ladder rungs, and so on after?
