Interesting Sherman

While looking around on Google Maps, I came across this tank, which is part of a memorial in Falaise. Besides the non standard camo job  there is a lot going on. It is a DD tank, has an early style mantlet, but has the allround vision cupola.

@JayJHCruz About the faces, I’m thinking that they are some kind of transfer/decal. I think at least one of them is repeated on the tank.

I think some kind of anti war protest?

I think it was done using templates/stencils, kinda like Banksy does. They seem to be based on well know war photos.

Cool, thanks for the link!

One of the faces on the tank is this man:

And a sharp nose with cast-in steps that was already fitted before the DD conversion, so it’s not a post-war refit as part of an overhaul. The commander’s cupola is also not in the standard orientation. And the tank took a hit on its turret appliqué armour plate.

It’s hard to be sure with the artwork on it, but does it have cast-in hull appliqué?

Oh, wait:—

Ce tank oeuvre d’art, reconstitué avec de vraies pièces de différents chars

So apparently, it’s not entirely original as a tank.

The tank itself was reconstructed from parts of different tanks and was previously used as a range target, hence the panels riddled with bullet holes and damage from explosives.”

From the article linked in my previous post.

If aftermarket decals ever become available for that. I’ll do just because…

You say that as if you expect people on the Internet to click links rather than post things without looking if they’ve already been mentioned …

If I had to guess I’d say that the turret is from a different tank. It has that counter weight on the bustle that was added to the m4a3e4 76mm tanks that saw combat in ww2.

As far as the hull is concerned my gut tells me that differential cover is the original one that vehicle came with but I’d need an image of the rear to see if it has the DD fittings on it. That weird hull with the cast in armor goes with the DD tank as far as I can remember.

This photo taken by British photojournalist Don McCullin in 1968 is called “Shell-shocked US Marine, The Battle of Hue”
