Hello everyone, I’ve started building Trumpeter’s 1:35 UAZ-469 in Iraqi Army colors from the Iran-Iraq War. While researching, I found photos of vehicles painted entirely in sand tones and others in sand-and-green camouflage. I also came across one photo showing a sand-painted vehicle with its original Russian green interior, and several others where the entire interior was repainted in sand. Could anyone clarify this for me? Were the UAZ-469s exported in sand schemes fully repainted inside and on the chassis as well? Thanks in advance.
Hello!
You have two main options here: some vehicles could be built “for storage” in russian green and then redirected to Iraq - then locally repainted. Then the interior (and underside) would stay green (taping off the gauges and looking out for the seats could be considered too much hassle). Those vehicles could have chipping revealing the original green colour.
OR they might be built especially for export - those could be overall sand - maybe with the exception of frame and wheels that could still be black. Vehicles like that would have dash inscriptions/data plates in English and could have special hot country features - improved engine cooling and stuff.
I’m writing this from my general knowledge of soviet bloc automotive industry…
Hope this helps - thanks for reading and have a nice day

Pawel, thank you!!!
By the way, would you recommend using British Sand (Model Master) for painting the Iraqi UAZ, or would a less yellowish sand tone be more accurate? I’m planning to build the version captured by Iran.
Not all UAZ-469s are green.
Although there are significantly more green ones than all the others combined.
And not all of them are military-grade. The vehicle is also in demand by civilians, especially in rural areas. We should thank our roads for this, or rather the lack of them in many places.
And I’m attaching the factory sand color markings for this vehicle. Might come in handy.
But I agree that if they were repainted, there would be a layering of paint and they wouldn’t bother with the inside.
However, if there were targeted deliveries under international contracts, the factory could have painted them the color the customer required. Then repainting wouldn’t have been necessary. It looks like your photo shows the factory paint job.
