Hello, I have been using Ammo of Mig One Shot Primer (Black) for a while. I found it to be really challenging to clean it out of my airbrush, especially the cup. The biggest issue is when it dries, it’s really hard to remove it. Does anyone have suggestions on a thinner or solvent I can use to remove it more easily?
I heard that the one shot primer is rebottled Badger Stynylrez Primer, which is a chore to clean. I’ve found the only thing that will get my airbrush 100% clean after using the badger primer is old Testors Acryl dried paint solvent, which is sadly long out of production.
I put my airbrush parts into a small jar. I fill with lacquer thinner and place the jar into my ultrasonic cleaner and run it through a couple of cycles. Clean as new.
Yes I use Mr. Color Thinner too- works a treat to clean the airbrush- and the One Shot primer too. I also use Injection Site Swabs- the little square wipes with alcohol- they work great to clean the airbrush.
I have a Grex airbrush that uses Teflon seals throughout which are impervious to acetone. As a last resort I use acetone for cleaning everything. I have yet to come across a paint that can resist it. Bad side is acetone highly flammable and toxic so adequate precautions need to be taken. I only use it outdoors, wear gloves, eye protection and a respirator with a organic vapor filter. Since I tend to paint with lacquers my first go to is lacquer thinner.
First and foremost with Primers, at least the good ones like One Shot, Mr Surfacer, or Tamiya Liquid Surfacer… clean your airbrush immediately afterwards before the primer has a chance to dry and cure.
I’m with TopSmith on using Klean Strip lacquer thinner as my preferred cleaner for the airbrush as well.
