Jagdpanther track question

Armorama Gurus,

I have Takom’s Jagdpanther G1 early (2125W) and wanted to replace the tracks with Tamiya’s indy links (easier assembly than Takom). Basic research says they used 64/660/150, which were the same as the Panther.. Tamiya offers a set for Panther D and G. Which one is appropriate for early JPs or does it matter?

Thanks in advance.

The Panther D tracks were upgraded over time. The track face had 5 or 6 chevrons added for increased traction. By the time Jagdpanther (even early ones) were built, the earlier style were obsolete. Go for the tracks for the Panther G.

Thank you very much!

Just so you know, the Tamiya tracks don’t have hollowed guide horns.

Depending on just how accurate you want to be I understand that the Jagdpanther used their own version of Panther G track. I believe the JP track link have an extra cleat or similar, but I don’t remember the details and where I learned this.

Apologies if this info is less than helpful.

THANKS TO ALL!!

I’m really not that particular. As far as the guide horns, I can drill out the ones that will be visible.

Or cover with mud.

The tracks on (most) Jagdpanthers were different from regular Panther tracks. The links on the Jagdpanther had a small “tooth” on the edge of the running surface, which you can see in the picture.

RFM do a set of plastic Jagdpanther tracks that include this and they are quite affordable and easy to build. Because they are workable, they are easier to install than the Tamiya ones, besides being more detailed as well.

Those do look really good.

I decided to go with the tracks that came with the kit. They are a pain, so far.

Thanks again for your input

What is the reason for this? Anyone know?

From what I understand the consensus is that it’s a casting anomaly. Like any other tank, the Jagdpanther was built from parts supplied by many subcontracters and at least one the foundries that made the track links, did it this way. There is no real benefit to traction for instance, that such a tiny spike would have on a 45 ton vehicle.
