or more correctly ‘compression release engine brake’.

Yeah. Especially at 03:00!!! My Apt. is 250 meters from the freeway. S’pose to be illegal to jake brake in the area but is enforced even less than speed limit.

@Uncle-Heavy , you knew I’d need to sound off on this one!

A Kenworth C-500 tri drive bed truck - one of my favorites on the net:

This video is such a treat because in addition to the Jakes, just listen to the turbo scream!

This is from a guy in Alberta on youtube, Timelapse Trucker. I’d love to build a 1/24 model of this truck -but man - with all the resin required (printed cab, axles, lots of wheels etc) it would cost a fortune!

Cheers

All I can say is best thing created since wonder bread. I depended on it when 90k + heavy. You don’t like Jake brakes then don’t buy stuff so trucks don’t need to be in the road.

Yeah, some of those trucks can sure rattle the glass out of your home.

The main thing about Jake brakes is that they are a safety device, adding significant braking power to trucks. As they can slow a truck with less reliance on the truck’s service brakes, many drivers prefer to leave them on all the time and place less wear, tear and heat on the brakes.

The problem of course is noise, and sometimes that noise is loud enough to rattle windows or set off car alarms. This is why Jake brake laws exist in certain jurisdictions. However, the reason Jake brakes ‘sound’ loud isn’t because of the Jake brake system. The noise comes from old, worn out, modified or eliminated mufflers. Mufflers are primarily used to reduce exhaust noise but many big diesel trucks can operate without mufflers because the turbo which all big diesels use, can also muffle noise. However, Jake brakes operate by releasing compression energy which bypasses the turbo. With modified or eliminated mufflers you get the racket and distinctive whop whop whop sound as the engine slows the vehicle. The easiest solution is to use mufflers and many modern trucks are now producing much less noise, to the point that you wouldn’t know Jakes are being used.
