I bought this kit from Dave Knights a while back and started gathering info on colors and details, let me dig it out and I’ll post it later. Info on the cockpit is pretty scarce, though.
From research I did for B6N and Ki-84 both were somewhere between an olive and cockpit green, a very strange shade that took me a while to mix. Both were Nakajima aircraft though so colors may vary
Very similar to the shade linked above, almost like a grayish olive
Wait until you start looking for the “right” color for aotake, the metal protection coating widely used on non-cockpit interior surfaces. Literally “green bamboo”, the coating compound itself is clear, but various pigments were mixed in to ensure even coverage; the problem was that there was no standard pigment formula, so it was produced in a wide range of colors, blue and green being the most common:
The NASM’s restored Nakajima J1N Gekko has the interior sidewalls and major structural elements in the cockpit painted with aotake, which for their restoration can be modeled by applying silver, then a clear blue-green on top. Other museums have Zeroes with a bright metallic blue appearance for their aotake-coated areas.
Yes that is a rabbit hole for sure! I actually made a mix for my B6N! I did as you say, laid down some silver, then made a mix of tamiya clear blue and clear green. Getting a good shade was tricky, this is where I ended up
It looks a little more green in the photos than actually it is. @TopSmith can kinda make out then interior color through the canopy
If you can find them, check source photos (historical is probably a lost cause, being almost entirely B&W) and restorations – some manufacturers had a regular paint on the inside surface of landing gear covers, rather than bare aotake. I can’t say you’re mistaken there, because I haven’t looked up the practice for the B6N, but I’ve seen Zeroes with grey-green interiors of the gear doors.
For the exterior color, Mr Hobby makes Kawanishi Green in their Mr Color line, C383. Humbrol 2 Emerald Green is supposed to be a good match I remember reading somewhere.
Coming up with a solid reference on the underside Gray is a little more of a challenge. I suppose worst case you can go with one of the mainstream IJN Light Grays
